Not to put a damper on this Nettalk party but the Marketwatch story is a company press release not an editorial article.

Also with the prevalence of iphone/ipod/ipad/android devices can I assume that the interest in this item is for either a cheap fax line or for those family and friends who unwilling or unable to use skype/gv etc?

I was partially incorrect. Magicjack does not officially support faxes. Because they compress the signal, a lot of people have trouble with faxes. I could never get it to work properly and Magicjack support will not help with fax issues.

Nettalk does support faxes. They use a lower compression so have less issues with faxes.

I looked at their Terms of Service and it doesn't specify any cap. It implies local and long distance is unlimited, unless you have a plan that has specified minutes.

Specifically:

A onetime flat fee for unlimited local/long distance calling, call features, and advanced service. Depending on the specific calling plan to which you subscribe, other types of calls, such as in-state, state-to-state, or outbound international calling, may either be included in the monthly service flat fee on an unlimited basis, or may carry additional per-minute rates. All such rate information will be described in the marketing materials and/or international rate table associated with your offer and/or subscription.

Thanks for the info. Did you have VOIP through Comcast before Net talk? I wonder how easy it is to port over my number from Comcast? I'm on one of their triple play bundles but I plan to just go for internet and cable when my current deal is up later this year.

"Exceed the 3000 minute limit just once, and you'll then be forced to a pay-per-minute plan forever." and if am not wrong it counts both incoming/outgoing local and international depending on what plan you are on..so its not that hard for a family of 4 to go over that limit. Would stay away !

No, sorry, when I got NetTalk, it was my first time using a VOIP service. Before NetTalk I had AT&T. At the time of purchase, they didn't have the feature to port an existing number yet, so I was given a new number. I don't know what the procedure is to port an existing phone number.

thanx for the headsup. thats a damn shame..... I had one in the cart but not pulling the trigger, my mom calls her sisters all the time and 100 minutes a day is just slightly north of absolutely worthless.....
