You can install windows, it doesn't use a lot of writes I don't imagine. And if you're not installing windows on your SSD, then why bother with an SSD? Windows doesn't only reside in RAM, it resides elsewhere, so you should load it from the SSD so it's always accessible. You want Windows to be as responsive as possible since that's where most of your time spent on the computer is. Keep in mind that 3000 writes is not 3000 files, it's the actually memory bits, so if you've got a few large files, they'll use a lot more writes than a few small files, like windows is constantly using. That's why video production on an SSD will kill the drive quickly, versus consumer use of an SSD will make it last a long time (including gaming).

I'm having a hard time tracking what controller that one had, but I believe it is the same sandforce controller that this one has. The memory might be slightly better, and I only say that because Sandisk Extreme is top-tier RAM chips for flash memory, so I would assume that would extend to their other top-tier offerings like those SSDs. The difference is that the sandisk are now regular priced, and this is now $170.
