This version does not have custom firmware but I have one and the firmware gets updated frequently.
If it's not Samsung, it's not worth buying.

Figure its a fair thing to do since how else would people know? I have XMBC on an upstairs computer but for the simplicity of this hopefully hooking it up downstairs will make life a bit easier for a cheap middle point.

This box now piqued my interest when they announced the Slingplayer application on it for free.
I have the older WDTV Lives with wdlxtv firmware- does local streaming awesomely, Netflix well and having a web interface is nice... but having updated firmware from WD is nicer... if Amazon VOD comes, I might have to do some replacing... |

Hope this helps. There is a plugin wdflix which allows you to stream movies directly. I have been using it for a while and love it. |

I can stream movies directly right now from a network share, media server, or online service (Netflix). |

the only benefit i've seen with using WDLXTV is that it boots up considerably quicker.
the WD firmware takes like 20-30 seconds. The WDLXTV is probably about 9-11 seconds. |
