Verizon Unlimited Data Plan
I just came into my upgrade period. Has Verizon implemented their new plan to eliminate the unlimited data plans when you upgrade to a 4g phone?

You keep your Unlimited 3G plan if you pay full price for your new phone.
You get the discounted upgrade when switching to the 4G LTE but you lose the Unlimited and MUST go with a Data Share Plan. In other words, they will not subsidize phones [dslreports.com] for Unlimited 3G users anymore. Last edited by menace33; 06-12-2012 at 04:58 AM.. |

It looks like some people pre-ordering the Galaxy S III are getting the unlimited data plan for July. Although Verizon has publicly stated they want to eliminate the plan, I guess it would be a way for these upgraders to get out of their 2 year agreement if they do eliminate that plan. YMMV, I wouldn't expect VZW to have that grandfather clause forever and across the board with all phones. |

That being said, the article states they plan on doing this in the summer, but have not decreed a specific date in which they will start it which is usually what Verizon does when they are ready to start new policies in sales/billing. |

The new plans were announced today. I believe they take effect in a week or two. To keep your unlimited data you will have to buy a new phone at retail pricing. Since I have a business plan I am hoping there are ways around this, but probably not. Under family pricing this new plan costs me an additional $50 a month.

I Tweeted at Verizon to ask if the changes applied to business plans as well and they said "No changes have been made at this point for our business customers." So at least for the time being I am safe, lets hope this lasts until the next upgrade cycle in a few months. |

In the new plan there is no extra charge to use your smartphone's mobile hot spot feature, it just counts against your data use.
So here's what I am thinking - Upgrade now to Galaxy S III, keeping my unlimited data plan - Will I be able to tether for free using mobile hot spot etc or will I still need to hack my phone in order to do this? |

***I just got off the phone with Verizon. As long as you are eligible and upgrade your phone before 6/28, you keep your old plan for another 2 years.***
I read this morning that the upgrade and lose your unlimited data plan will not go into affect until 6/28. So I think I have until then to renew the existing plan with a new phone and keep the same plan. I really, really despise Verizon. Last edited by dealgate; 06-13-2012 at 03:53 AM.. |
