I pay about 160/month for 2 smart phones, 700 minutes (we dont even use all 700 minutes anyway), 250 texts on each line (we dont even use all of those either), and 4GB data for one line, and unlimited data on my line. The cheapest Ill be able to get is 180 for 2 smartphones and 1 GB of shared data. Its not even close! Which is good enough for me to switch if Verizon forces it on me after our 2 yr is up. |

It sounds like for the iPhone, Virgin Mobile prepaid may end up being the way to go.
$30 / mo for 300 min talk / unlimited text / unlimited data. Uses Sprint network. No phone subsidy. http://www.pcworld.com/article/25...chart.html http://www.virginmobileusa.com/iphone |

These prices are horrible. The whole point to a family shared plan is that it's cheaper than getting 2 individual plans. Getting 2x 2GB data plans is cheaper than a shared 4GB plan. Yes, there is the benefit of sharing the data so one phone could use 1GB of data and the other 3GB of data but most users aren't hitting their data caps anyways so going over isn't too big of a concern.
The shared data plans should be slightly more expensive than the single data plans. Something like $40 for 2GB or $60 for 5GB a month of shared data. Gonna have to seriously look at Sprint and Tmobile again once our contract is up, Verizon doesn't seem to want to keep it's customers. You'd think I'd be an ideal person for this. wrong.
current plan: 3 smartphones + 2 dumbphones + unlimited text + 1400min/month = $240 new plan: $250. If you can't save money w/ that setup then something is wrong. it only helps if everyone has a smartphone. these plans won't be kind to those w/ dumbphones. |

Looks like I am leaving Verizon too. I pay $180 a month now (including taxes for 1400 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited data, and friends and family for 3 smartphones. Mine will end up costing $220 plus taxes, so probably around $240. What a f**king ripoff!
Great site, great book! It's free for Amazon Prime members, check it out:

Anyway, I pre-ordered my S3 at target the other day, and most likely this will come out after the new plans start. If I can't keep my unlimited i will be asking for my $50 back, luckily I chose target because you do get your money back, not gift card like Best Buy. The big question will be what happens when someone on a family plan upgrades, does it change for everyone then? For instance I am going to use my sisters upgrade and give her my razr. But if she gets put on the new plan, then I assume everyone on the plan has too as well, and that would suck. We have four smart phones and one feature phone, 3 of the smart phones have unlimited, one has 2gb. We usually use a little over 4GB total, but some months are way more, last month i was traveling and used over 10GB by myself. If i got the 6gb at $80 it would come out to $270 total with the phones added. We pay $299 now, and my dad could get a smartphone for just $10 more which he has been wanting to do but not for $30, so if we did that the new one would be $280, so twenty bucks less, for unlimited minutes and another smartphone. but the unlimited minutes is not really something we need, wish they had other options for minutes. So its a toss up, save $20 a month or keep unlimited so we don't have to watch the meter. |

I WISH we had shared data plan on AT&T. Currently on a 5-ppl family plan, 1400mins w/unlimited text for $110. Then $20-25 each line for data. And most of us barely use 400MB each month. We could easily save $60/month with a 4GB shared data plan. Of course, I'm assuming that when AT&T give us shared data plan, it'll just be an add-on instead of restructuring the entire plan.
What's the hold up AT&T?? Last edited by itaintrite; 06-12-2012 at 11:22 AM.. |
