Verizon cancellation policy - no prorated refund for billing in advance?
My Verizon contract was up, so I ported my cell phone number to Page Plus Cellular. I was billed "in advance" by Verizon, from 5/04-6/03. However I ported my number on 5/12. How is it legal for Verizon to keep money for services they did not provide? They will not prorate the amount from 5/13-6/03. Is this normal? Is it some obscure line item I missed in their gigantic contract? I don't understand. Has anyone else dealt with this? I am tempted to let this bill go to collections based on principal. I don't really need to keep a "good" credit score, if there is such a thing. Last edited by Jabbit; 06-12-2012 at 04:33 PM.. |

Is there some confusion on the dates or something? Or did you port the number without cancelling with Verizon immediately?
They usually prorate when you cancel, meaning they charge from start of billing cycle to the date of cancellation. It looks like either they did not kill your line when you wanted them to or your cycle dates are very odd. |

the account gets canceled when you port
I know we went to cancel mid cycle and we would have been billed per kb usage which was way more than the normal bill Last edited by stufine; 06-12-2012 at 06:46 PM.. for those that hate spelling mistakes www.walmarts.co

I did not want to call them to cancel. Like Curtieson said, my number would have just disappeared. I have had the same # for over 10 years so I didn't want to take that chance.
It was a smart phone, but it was new to the account. I think that is part of my issue. To simplify things: I had a regular phone for 23 months, bought a smart phone outright (used) and activated that at the start of month 24. 1 Week into month 25, I port my number. Now being charged for month 24 and 25, data and minutes. I should get a 75% refund for month 25. But they say no. I am going to call back to try to speak to someone else. If not, Verizon will get $0. |

What I have done is when I know im going to port I call earlier in the day and say cancel my contract the following day. Never had an issue.
Edit now that I remember, t-blo-mo had in the contract that if you cancel you have to pay the remainder of the bill period still. Verizon might have similar verbage on the contract you signed. |

Yes, I went through the same thing with Verizon.
Yes, you pay Verizon the month in advance. Yes, it's in their policy not to prorate. No, you can't do anything about it unless whining to a CS rep brings a sympathetic ear. Joe Biden says Buy a Shotgun! Wackiness ensues! [youtu.be]
