Reel Lawn Mower $159.99 at Amazon Fiskars 17-Inch

I've always wondered what people do with all the clippings that are ejected from using a mower like this? Sweep it up? Leave it on the grass as mulch? Get the bag add-on to catch it?

I've always just let the clippings drop on the lawn as mulch with our gas-powered mowers. I can't say if it's better or worse for the lawn, but it's sure easier than hauling clippings around and getting rid of them.

It still puzzles me why these things are so expensive....you can get a gas powered lawnmower for around the same price. These should cost $50, tops.

Yeah, I kinda got sucked into the hype and deal last time, so I'll have to let you know once I try mine for real. I guess the argument is that these are supposed to have less maintenance and no gas costs, along with being "green". This particular model is supposed to be the "cadillac" of reel mowers. One selling point for me was that one of our dogs goes absolutely nuts just when we run the vacuum, let alone a loud engine.

ps. I should mention that I had a ton of points and stuff so only paid like $50 out of pocket for mine. I'm not sure if I would've gone in at $150+

If you keep up with weekly mowing and only take off a 1/2 inch or so, just leave it on the grass. It's actually good for it. If you're bad about mowing weekly and take off more than 1/2 an inch, you'll need to get the bag add-on to catch it. Too much mulch will suffocate the grass.

I have the 18-Inch StaySharp Max model, and I just leave the clippings in the yard. Just by the nature of how it cuts and flings the clippings, it makes for a very even dispersal of the clippings (unlike my old gas mower which would live clumps of grass all over the place). So I just leave the clippings where they fall.

It is a good workout, and it takes a little getting used to. But I love mine. Takes a little bit longer, and it does take more work. But honestly, the feeling of breathing in after mowing and not having that nasty stinging sensation in your nose/mouth/lungs from exhaust fumes is well worth it. Also I figure it will take about 3 years of mowing to have saved that much money in gasoline and upkeep of a regular gas mower.

If you have a pretty simple lawn that isn't too big, and you are aware of its limitations (tall grass/weeds will not be cut well, if at all), it should be worth it.

It's also a great deal if you don't like loud noises and noxious fumes. I bought mine for $200 - 10% coupon at Lowes a few years ago and haven't missed my old gas-powered mower for a minute.

I usually don't try to mow the whole half acre at once, but sometimes if its not too hot out I'll do it. So even if you have a big yard you can break it up into smaller jobs. But I have more time than most people do, so that's also a factor. I'd substitute doing this for most gym stuff, so some might consider spending 4-6 hours a week doing motor-less yard work instead of working out in a building somewhere. Then you look better and so does your yard.

This is real compact for storage too. You can push it right up to a wall and then the handle flips up so its got just the base footprint, couple of square feet. Just watch what you push it up against, I pushed it up to my spare sneakers and when I went to put them on later saw that the blade brushed the top of them and cut through all of the laces. Just a bump.

Get one even if you don't have a lawn. Go out at night and silently mow other peoples lawns. Soon you'll be known as the Lawn Fairy.
