I called AT&T and told them I'm thinking about cancelling my service, because a local competitor MetroPCS, has better deals. They offered me family text messaging for 6 months free, which is $30 a month. Told me to hang in there, times are hard, but they have shared family data plans coming this summer, and to enjoy the $30 credit for 6 months, then reconsider after seeing the shared data plans that are supposedly due out this summer.

I have 5 lines, and all 5 are still under contract, with over 1 year remaining. I told the rep I was willing to pay the ETF fee's because I'll save money in the long run.

This worked for 4 different people, figured I'd share with you guys.

Still Working as of 3/6/2013.
Still working as of 10/14/2013

By dialing 611, wait till it got pass the language selection,

press 1, 7, 5 for cancellation department!

Chat script:

Hi. I have been pricing around the market and noticed other companies are significantly cheaper. MetroPcs offers $50 unlimited everything and I am leaning towards switching over to them for the savings. I want to know if there are any incentives available to help me have a reason to stay.

If they mention ETF, say you would wait for your contract to end or paying the ETF to switch will save you money in the long run over staying with AT&T with your current bill.

Here is what to expect for those that are like me and nervous asking for things...
I called 611 then hit 1 then hit 7 then whatever number service cancelations was.

Then I told the lady "I have some friends that are using a local carrier and getting $50 unlimited everything and I'm wondering if there any incentives or promotions to reduce my bill."
She said "I understand you want to lower your bill but what carrier was it?"
I said "It's metropcs."
She pulled up some information and said "Are you aware that they throttle data after 2.5 gb of use?"
I said: "well i'm not worried about that because I have wifi at work and wifi at home."
She said "They also are only local calls for the unlimited calls. Long distance will be additional."
I said "Yeah, we also looked into virgin mobile and they have roaming charges but we don't really make long distance calls or leave our area."
She then asked "Is this for both lines that are considering leaving?"
I said "Yeah both lines would be transferring."
Then she came back and offered the promotion.

I called back after mine expired few weeks ago. They said I had to wait another 6 months to be able to be "eligible" for this again and is only good for 6 months, every 12 months. They were able to offer me $30 credit for a few months and bump down my family texting to $20/month though... Not sweet but whatever I can get...

Good luck.

I was able to get it again. I guess it's once every 12 months. After it expired I was given a "one time" $180 credit. So, it's kind of like we've had $30 off a month for the last 18ish months. Not exactly 18 because I forgot to call for a couple months after it expired the first time. Definitely worth a call.

i was offered this as part of my retention, the CSR who put it on initially did it fine another csr messed it up. I have filed a complaint with the BBB. I asked to have it fixed by the CSRs but they coudl not do so. I don't feel like dealing with CS anymore so I'll have the BBB contact their customer relations for me. They always seem to have more pull.

The CSR I spoke with said the offer was 1 time only and basically to go pound sand. All 5 of my lines are under contract so I really don't have a leg to stand on. I didn't even bother speaking with retentions.

Just got $60 off current bill (one time discount) through live chat. And they told me to call in for other offers that may be available. Something about limited discounts through live chat, definitely hitting them up this week for the texting offer or whatever else they my have to offer. Only about 5 months left on current contract if you are keeping score.

got a one time discount through chat, i had to call 877-999-1083 to get more long term reductions and the rep said she had never heard of any messaging credits, 180$ or lifetime 20$ monthly, which is weird

You must be prepared to drop AT&T and use their promo to stay on as their customer. If you are still under contract, good luck with trying. One more observation about all the questions whether it is still available - you will never know unless you try and report to everyone on the results.

I called the day AFTER my $30/mo for 6 months promo expired.
(I have a calandar set in my iPhone to remind me)

Anyway - I got $20/mo for family mesaging for the life of my ATT service.
I have 2 iPhones under contract. 1 expires May 2013, the other September 2014.

I will call again in 2 months to complain some more.

Basically all I tell them is I can go to Metro PCS for cheaper. They tried telling me that I wouldnt get good service& I told the rep that I dont travel anywhere, but the local service is the same as ATT.

THANK YOU!! We have 3 lines, all still under contract. One was just renewed last month. I got $30 credit for 6 months, lifetime $10 discount after that, and dropped down to 700 minutes without losing 12,000+ roll over.

My day has started out wonderful, thank you!!

No, I called 611, pressed 3 for cancel/lost my device and then one other option (don't remember the #) for canceling. I asked how much my cancel fees would be and then just asked if there was anything on my bill I could take off to make cheaper since times are tough. He said I could lower the minute plan w/o losing rollover over the phone only and then offered the $30/6 months. I asked how much my bill would be after the 6 months since he was lowering my plan and he then offered the $10 lifetime discount commitment. I told him thank you about a dozen times Smilie

Good luck!
