I called AT&T and told them I'm thinking about cancelling my service, because a local competitor MetroPCS, has better deals. They offered me family text messaging for 6 months free, which is $30 a month. Told me to hang in there, times are hard, but they have shared family data plans coming this summer, and to enjoy the $30 credit for 6 months, then reconsider after seeing the shared data plans that are supposedly due out this summer.

I have 5 lines, and all 5 are still under contract, with over 1 year remaining. I told the rep I was willing to pay the ETF fee's because I'll save money in the long run.

This worked for 4 different people, figured I'd share with you guys.

Still Working as of 3/6/2013.
Still working as of 10/14/2013

By dialing 611, wait till it got pass the language selection,

press 1, 7, 5 for cancellation department!

Chat script:

Hi. I have been pricing around the market and noticed other companies are significantly cheaper. MetroPcs offers $50 unlimited everything and I am leaning towards switching over to them for the savings. I want to know if there are any incentives available to help me have a reason to stay.

If they mention ETF, say you would wait for your contract to end or paying the ETF to switch will save you money in the long run over staying with AT&T with your current bill.

Here is what to expect for those that are like me and nervous asking for things...
I called 611 then hit 1 then hit 7 then whatever number service cancelations was.

Then I told the lady "I have some friends that are using a local carrier and getting $50 unlimited everything and I'm wondering if there any incentives or promotions to reduce my bill."
She said "I understand you want to lower your bill but what carrier was it?"
I said "It's metropcs."
She pulled up some information and said "Are you aware that they throttle data after 2.5 gb of use?"
I said: "well i'm not worried about that because I have wifi at work and wifi at home."
She said "They also are only local calls for the unlimited calls. Long distance will be additional."
I said "Yeah, we also looked into virgin mobile and they have roaming charges but we don't really make long distance calls or leave our area."
She then asked "Is this for both lines that are considering leaving?"
I said "Yeah both lines would be transferring."
Then she came back and offered the promotion.

Any retention deals if you are on the mobile share plan?
Same question. Anyone tried this?

Got free unlimited texts ($20) for six months. Considering device price with Straight Talk would run me a little over $25 for an iPhone plus $45 for service a month, that discount takes my AT&T service down to a comparable rate of $70 a month. Thanks OP!

I'm on a 3 line shared enterprise plan. Called and said I was considering MetroPCS and they gave me 6 months free of unlimited messaging on all of my lines. Saved me $30! Thank you OP!

Just gave them a call to see if they're able to offer free messaging again but they said they can only do that once a year. Frown I was offered $10 messaging for life instead. Tough decision whether to stay with them for $70 or maybe go with Straight Talk.

can you help me please??? how does that work. What do i have to ask. who should i contact. is it retention?

I actually just spoke to a general sales rep. Just when you get close to the limit call and see about changing your plan to a plan with more minutes then calling to change it back after the month is up. they will most likely suggest giving you more roll over minutes if you have none. Or just ask that is what i did the second time.. I told them i didn't want to keep calling and just asked politely if I could have more roll over minutes..

Just called they gave me 6 months free of unlimited messaging on all of my lines. The rep was really easy to talk to and I didn't have any issues. I let them know I was just inquiring about my contract end date.

Thanks! My 6 month $30 credit ended 2 months ago, so I figured I will call again to try to get it again.

Called the main att number 1-800-331-0500 and got to the retention department. It's the option where "you wish to cancel service." I basically said I'm looking to cancel my service because MetroPCS is cheaper (like op said). The rep tried to convince me their service is crappy and etc and I kept reiterating that I use mostly wifi and don't really talk on the phone much... its just the monthly PRICE that is too much. Service doesn't matter all that much. Just trying to lower my monthly bills.

I didn't want to bring up the $30 credit for 6 months on cell to cell and unlimited texting on family plan so I kept talking with him until he eventually brought up the $30 credit himself. And it worked! Thanks op!

wait this will work on business plans? $130/month (after taxes) for two iphone5's with unlimited data? I'd love to knock that down a few bucks but don't want to rock the unlimited boat. Kinda of like the unlimited IPAD LTE unthrottled plan - don't want to rock the boat on that gem.

I was able to get it on a ATT Enterprise/FAN account.

hmm. wonder if they'll do this for AT&T employees, lol.

I had a customer come into store once and tell me about customer care offering her the 6mo $30 credit to keep her with AT&T and was really surprised to hear about it. guess it's still going

Based on their new pricing on a 5 line account (3 data and 2 regular phones) I am still 300 dollars cheaper over 2 years versus T-Mobile. This includes subsidize phones versus the full costs. This deal really is not great for larger family plans. When T-Mobile refarms and starts LTE, I will look at them then. That is still 2 years away till completion.

I have at&T and well I am very frustrated with my internet and service I have been getting lately. I do have the $20 a month texting plan, I wonder if I call them they will give me something to keep me from leaving because I am SERIOUSLY thinking of leaving and going to verizon.

What plan/data plan are u in? are u using FAN discount? For family of more than 3 lines, t-mobile is the best - that is what I am hearing... i could be wrong.

I have a FAN account with 3 lines. I also have grandfathered unlimited data on one line, and apparently grandfathered 2GB plans on the other two lines. I called and pretty much ran through the script. The dude on the phone was very nice and helpful and brought up this offer over the phone without any direct prompting from me. I just asked if he could make my bill closer to the $50 deal from MetroPCS.
