I called AT&T and told them I'm thinking about cancelling my service, because a local competitor MetroPCS, has better deals. They offered me family text messaging for 6 months free, which is $30 a month. Told me to hang in there, times are hard, but they have shared family data plans coming this summer, and to enjoy the $30 credit for 6 months, then reconsider after seeing the shared data plans that are supposedly due out this summer.

I have 5 lines, and all 5 are still under contract, with over 1 year remaining. I told the rep I was willing to pay the ETF fee's because I'll save money in the long run.

This worked for 4 different people, figured I'd share with you guys.

Still Working as of 3/6/2013.
Still working as of 10/14/2013

By dialing 611, wait till it got pass the language selection,

press 1, 7, 5 for cancellation department!

Chat script:

Hi. I have been pricing around the market and noticed other companies are significantly cheaper. MetroPcs offers $50 unlimited everything and I am leaning towards switching over to them for the savings. I want to know if there are any incentives available to help me have a reason to stay.

If they mention ETF, say you would wait for your contract to end or paying the ETF to switch will save you money in the long run over staying with AT&T with your current bill.

Here is what to expect for those that are like me and nervous asking for things...
I called 611 then hit 1 then hit 7 then whatever number service cancelations was.

Then I told the lady "I have some friends that are using a local carrier and getting $50 unlimited everything and I'm wondering if there any incentives or promotions to reduce my bill."
She said "I understand you want to lower your bill but what carrier was it?"
I said "It's metropcs."
She pulled up some information and said "Are you aware that they throttle data after 2.5 gb of use?"
I said: "well i'm not worried about that because I have wifi at work and wifi at home."
She said "They also are only local calls for the unlimited calls. Long distance will be additional."
I said "Yeah, we also looked into virgin mobile and they have roaming charges but we don't really make long distance calls or leave our area."
She then asked "Is this for both lines that are considering leaving?"
I said "Yeah both lines would be transferring."
Then she came back and offered the promotion.

Actually with the Mobile Share Value Plan, your FAN discount ONLY applies to the DATA costs. Example (20% FAN discount)

10GB Mobile Share Data - $100
FAN 20% Discount - -$20
Phone 1 - Off Contract - $40
Phone 1 - Off Contract Discount - -$25
Phone 2 - Off Contract - $40
Phone 2 - Off Contract Discount - -$25
Phone 3 - On Contract - $40
Phone 3 - No Discount

TOTAL (before taxes/fees) = $150/mo
I thought the $100 was for the unlimited minutes and text plan .. and $40 was for the data for each phone... my bad ..

This is my breakdown:

2GB Mobile Share Data - $40
FAN 23% Discount - -$9.80
Phone 1 - Off Contract - $40
Phone 1 - Off Contract Discount - -$15
Phone 2 - Off Contract - $40
Phone 2 - Off Contract Discount - -$15

TOTAL (before taxes/fees) = $80.20/mo + tax/fees

On the Mobile Share plans "unlimited" voice and SMS/MMS are "free" with your data service.

Also be sure you understand it's not 2GB for EACH phone... it's 2GB SHARED across those 2 phones. That means essentially 1GB per phone. Not 4GB! Watch your data usage or up your plan appropriately to not get charged for overages.

Unless you use more data and your overages are cheaper than moving up a data plan tier. . . .that can happen in certain situations.

Very true, however it's billed in a per MB cost... so that can get away from you in a matter of minutes. At least if you know you are over, AT&T will let you retroactively up your plan to the start of the billing cycle. Can even do it online.

Funny, I just switched FAN to different company with stipend+discount and my account was pretty much reset as "new" so the discounts I got (6 months free family txt and $25 monthly rentention credit for 3 months) went away. I called in and they finally convinced me to go to Mobile Share Plan (I would prefer 3GB shared, but I'll just pay for $15 for 1GB over a month more on top of 2GB plan). Anyhow, they also re-applied $25 credit and $30 off after going to Mobile Share so with 3 phones on Mobile Share, my monthly is under $75 including tax. I'm hoping once my stipend kicks in, it'll stay under $100 as well even with paying 1GB more per month. I don't know why they won't just offer shared 1, 2, 3, 4GB etc.

Yep, I agree.

For all the railing against AT&T (some deserved), I find that they really are not that bad to deal with, if you know what to expect.
