I called AT&T and told them I'm thinking about cancelling my service, because a local competitor MetroPCS, has better deals. They offered me family text messaging for 6 months free, which is $30 a month. Told me to hang in there, times are hard, but they have shared family data plans coming this summer, and to enjoy the $30 credit for 6 months, then reconsider after seeing the shared data plans that are supposedly due out this summer.

I have 5 lines, and all 5 are still under contract, with over 1 year remaining. I told the rep I was willing to pay the ETF fee's because I'll save money in the long run.

This worked for 4 different people, figured I'd share with you guys.

Still Working as of 3/6/2013.
Still working as of 10/14/2013

By dialing 611, wait till it got pass the language selection,

press 1, 7, 5 for cancellation department!

Chat script:

Hi. I have been pricing around the market and noticed other companies are significantly cheaper. MetroPcs offers $50 unlimited everything and I am leaning towards switching over to them for the savings. I want to know if there are any incentives available to help me have a reason to stay.

If they mention ETF, say you would wait for your contract to end or paying the ETF to switch will save you money in the long run over staying with AT&T with your current bill.

Here is what to expect for those that are like me and nervous asking for things...
I called 611 then hit 1 then hit 7 then whatever number service cancelations was.

Then I told the lady "I have some friends that are using a local carrier and getting $50 unlimited everything and I'm wondering if there any incentives or promotions to reduce my bill."
She said "I understand you want to lower your bill but what carrier was it?"
I said "It's metropcs."
She pulled up some information and said "Are you aware that they throttle data after 2.5 gb of use?"
I said: "well i'm not worried about that because I have wifi at work and wifi at home."
She said "They also are only local calls for the unlimited calls. Long distance will be additional."
I said "Yeah, we also looked into virgin mobile and they have roaming charges but we don't really make long distance calls or leave our area."
She then asked "Is this for both lines that are considering leaving?"
I said "Yeah both lines would be transferring."
Then she came back and offered the promotion.

quick 5 minute phone call saved me $180. Thank you OP!

BTW they offer either $30 off for 6 months or $20 for family messaging for life. $1 today is worth more than $1 tomorrow. I'll take as much as I can get NOW. (I have 2 iphones (no contract) and 2 standard lines (in contract))

Also depending on your billing cycle he was able to prorate my current bill, so "technically" speaking, I received about 6.5 months free.

Thanks!

Anyone got a script to use? Kinda feels awkward just saying I'm thinking of canceling my service after we've been with them for over 12 years..

You should have stated "I heard" that there was a 6 month free unlimited messaging promotion and the CSR should know. She told me that there was 2 option, 6 month free or $20 for unlimited family messaging (I took this option)

Now what if you already have $30 unlimited family messaging? Can you still get discount?

I said two lines are considering to switch to Metropcs for cheap internet plans. The price is whats making them want to switch. Is there anything that can be done to help them stay.

I was told nothing and maybe switch to a specialist.

Wooo hooo, thank you OP. Repped baby!

Just as an FYI, the CSR really tried to get me to downgrade my service (reduce my minutes) to lower my bill b/c I complained about the rate compared to Metro PCS. I replied "Why would I reduce my plan, just to get a lower rate, when Metro PCS includes unlimited minutes and will still be cheaper?"

She relented and offered me $30 for 6 months and said "Let's see Metro PCS offer this". LOL

Yes, it becomes free for 6 months, or reduced to $20/month forever.

Just call and menu yourself over to "cancel service". It will put you in Retention department. They will ask you why you want to cancel. Say you've priced it out through other carriers and you have determined you're paying too much. If they ask you how much you want to be spending give them a number (I don't know how much you're paying now, I said $100 would be nice since I have 4 lines and Metro PoS has 4 lines for $100). Don't give them too much, they will do most of the talking if you just say "Please tell me how much it will be to break contract". If it works be sure to rep the OP. IMHO he deserves it for sharing this. Smilie
