AT&T Customers: $30 Family Messaging credit for 6 months (retention offer?)

I called AT&T and told them I'm thinking about cancelling my service, because a local competitor MetroPCS, has better deals. They offered me family text messaging for 6 months free, which is $30 a month. Told me to hang in there, times are hard, but they have shared family data plans coming this summer, and to enjoy the $30 credit for 6 months, then reconsider after seeing the shared data plans that are supposedly due out this summer.



I have 5 lines, and all 5 are still under contract, with over 1 year remaining. I told the rep I was willing to pay the ETF fee's because I'll save money in the long run.



This worked for 4 different people, figured I'd share with you guys.

Hi. I have been pricing around the market and noticed other companies are significantly cheaper. MetroPcs offers $50 unlimited everything and I am leaning towards switching over to them for the savings. I want to know if there are any incentives available to help me have a reason to stay.

If they mention ETF, say you would wait for your contract to end or paying the ETF to switch will save you money in the long run over staying with AT&T with your current bill.



Here is what to expect for those that are like me and nervous asking for things...
I called 611 then hit 1 then hit 7 then whatever number service cancelations was.

Then I told the lady "I have some friends that are using a local carrier and getting $50 unlimited everything and I'm wondering if there any incentives or promotions to reduce my bill."
She said "I understand you want to lower your bill but what carrier was it?"
I said "It's metropcs."
She pulled up some information and said "Are you aware that they throttle data after 2.5 gb of use?"
I said: "well i'm not worried about that because I have wifi at work and wifi at home."
She said "They also are only local calls for the unlimited calls. Long distance will be additional."
I said "Yeah, we also looked into virgin mobile and they have roaming charges but we don't really make long distance calls or leave our area."
She then asked "Is this for both lines that are considering leaving?"
I said "Yeah both lines would be transferring."
Then she came back and offered the promotion.

Ah well, I think I'll pass on this. Don't do any messaging, and the 6000 rollover minutes I've been flipping since about two years ago doesn't really make the free m2m calling that big a deal

I did this when I was having trouble with my ATT Uverse and cell phone service about 2 months ago, I called recently to make sure the credit's were noted. One lady on there told me they don't offer that for any type of cancellations she's never heard of it before and I told her to read the notes there should be notes on my account for that 6mths no texting fee's. Turns out there were no notes on the account the original guy was just B.S.ing me and I'm still stuck with a horrible horrible phone w/ no service at my home or work because they are trying out the 4G network in my area... !! If I were you guys I would call back and verify the notes on the account w/ another rep. MAKE SURE YOU GET THOSE CREDITS!!! LOL

I've read this thread with great anticipation and the very last post says no promotion to those with 550 min plans. Crap! That's what I have.

It will help if you go straight to customer retention.

Dial 611
In the options press 4 for Account Info or Rate Changes
Press 5 to cancel your service.

Then just tell them you've been shopping around and you want to see how you can reduce your bill. Be patient and let them analyze your bill. At the right moment, ask them if there are any promotions that could help you out in these tough times. They offered it to me then. I didn't get an option but I took the $30 off for 6 months. Money now is better then the $20 lifetime IMO. When they come out with new plans that will probably not even apply.

She also mentioned that "since I had been with AT&T since 2001, she would be more than happy to help out a long time customer".

I have the 550 plan and he offered $20 a month unlimited messaging. I took it since some were saying nothing was offered with the 550 plan. I did ask if he had anything else and he said no.

First rep shot me down. Second rep offered a one time bill credit of $90. I took it and it reduced my bill by $90 instantly. I wonder if I can call back in the near future to ask for the $20/month text plan? Btw this was a normal rep and not through retentions.

You can upgrade to the 700 min plan and get the $10/month discount on family text and it comes out to about the same price. More minutes and free calls to other carriers, very nice.

Why is everyone picking the free 6 months? I was offered it but asked for $10 reduction for the unlimited messaging and calling. In the long run of a basic 2 year contract it saves you more. Adding the duration most of us would stay with AT&T the saving just gets bigger.

Because AT&T will switch to shared data plans soon anyway. The unlimited family messaging will be gone probably so money now is much better than uncertainty in new plans. New plans will most likely have unlimited voice and text with high data charges. The $30 family messaging will be useless then so you will most likely change or be forced to change when you upgrade your phone.

Maybe.

I didn't think about that, because data isn't even a real option for me, I have no use for it that justifies the current prices with any carrier.

Wokred spent 20 minutes one the phone. Got $20 a month for life unlimited msg-ing, A-list, unlimited M2M and lowered my plan and kept my 10K roll-over minutes. Just lowered my bill by $40 a month.
