Well, if I could go back. When I had a 10% back on fuel CC. If I had though of it. I would of stocked up on gift cards before they terminated that.

costco gas is the same as everyone else. I've seen numerous "name brand" gas trunks fill up our costco station.

However, even assuming $4/gallon gas, Costco Amex with 3% bonus beats Chase Freedom 5%, unless your price differential is <8 cents or you routinely cap out your Costco Amex gas bonus (occurs somewhere around $3k/year)

Or unless you would rather have Chase Freedom points than cash

I used to like the old freedom cards that didn't rotate quarterly but they forced the change. Now it's much like the discover card and I frequently use it for the bonus catagories from last quarter. Kinda of a pain to remember this stuff. I use penfed and don't have to think which card to use for gas (5 points) and grocery (3 points) all the time.

Odd... the two Costco by me are usually only about 1-3 cents less per gallon than Shell and Mobile. I'll stick with Mobile with the 5% off.

I was a Chevron Engineer for several years. The simple truth is that the oil and gas is processed by multiple companies on the same oil fields - literally right next to each other, all are accumulated on the same pipelines that feed the refineries. The refineries mix in all the crude steams that have been pre-processed and proceed to crack the crude to several grades of fuel. Then each seller pulls from this pool the lots they need and can additionally input other additives or cleaners for their own marketing purposes (ex: the "techron" additives). Irrespective of the additives, the reseller of fuel must meet the right octane level to market the gas. So in the end gas is gas (btw, don't get me started on how gas is priced the way it is - not what you think )

my Penfed does 5% for gas already.
and I'm so broke I don't eat out anymore. So looks like chase freedom will stay in the desk drawer.
