TU - biked as my ONLY form of transport for over 5 years in my youth. Helmets, leather (or denim, solid second choice) jackets, blue jeans, and boots are your friend. Several times having boots reduced something that would have been painful to simply a nuisance - helmets are why I am alive and talking to you. If you use a motorcylce a lot, boots are a very good idea. As an aside, get yourself some metal "sole savers" or taps, they can really extend the life of your boots. If you are going to be walking a fair bit on tile/vinyl or shag rugs, get the rubber ones (metal ones can scratch tile and they can snag the threads on deep carpets.
