Switching from iPhone to Android!
I have had every iPhone since the 3GS. I loved them. But, the tides are turning. The Galaxy S III is too irresistible and I am making the switch next week; albeit with a fair amount of apprehension, thus the reason I post here. I am hoping you smart folk well-versed in the world of Android OS can sooth my fears, here are a few questions I have:1. I love the way iTunes syncs all my music to my iPhone. I am religious/meticulous about properly tagged and categorized music with proper artwork and play counts, etc. Is there a way I can do this with Android and have it sync as it did on my iPhone? 2. There are so many customization options that it is almost overwhelming, what are some essentials in switching over? I understand it is all preference but I have heard there are nicer keyboards and such, In your experience what are the best? 3. Lastly, I haven't seen an S III in person but my experience with other Touchwiz based smartphones (S2 I've seen and Infuse 4G) I am not a fan of the green/black/blue color scheme, my friend has the One X and I much prefer the white scheme he has. Is there a way to change the color scheme on the S 3? Maybe to the HTC Sense style like on the One X, or just other colors I can experiment with? Thank you for your help and support I hope to receive some answers and am looking forward to my future endeavors as I plunge into the world of Android OS.

2. Are you tech savvy? There are not any custom ROM's for the SG3 yet cuz it isn't realised (a ROM is the android operating system it can be different versions like 2.3 or 4.0 and have different skins). I can explain to you the technical basics of how to change the rom on your phone but the best reference is XDA (a group of developers). http://forum.xda-developers.com/f...php?f=1563 Here is the website, I think this is the link for the international version of the S3, once the US version comes out there will be another link that has all the info you need to know to change ROMs. With all android ROM's there are many things you can change such as the keyboard. My favorite is Swype others like Swiftkey or SlideIT. In terms of ROMs in general I like Cyanogen ROMs. They are pretty much a full fledged army of volunteer developers that work on many devices. They focus on making Android ROMs that are as Vanilla as possible (no manufacturer skin). I hate Samsung Touchwiz other people like it. I prefer no skin, or HTC Sense and then Touchwiz. 3. Color schemes are the easiest to change, on a high volume device like the SG3 you should be able to find one to your liking. Also, when a developer is developing a phone you can ask him to make the colors a certain way. He may or may not listen. He will do what he likes. In the case where the community buys the developer a phone he is more willing to listen (yes you have 20 members that want a particular ROM so they each donate like 20 bucks to help a developer buy the phone). Honestly I have an American SG2 and it has lots of development but not as much as the international SG2. I guarantee once the phone starts selling will find at least 4 different ROMs to experiment with. I can't guarantee that any will be to your liking. I would buy the international SG3 if possible, the international One X, or One S (T-mobile USA or international is the same which is good). I am getting the One S, I like HTC better. |

1) There are options and other people may have more experience with this than I do. It kind of depends how you use itunes now and how things are organized. You can plug in your phone, and drag music to a folder and thats it. You don't need any special programs or apps, You can also use the DoubleTwist app on your phone, and then on the computer that works similar to how itunes does and allows you to drag music to your phone. I have only used it briefly, and I end up streaming most of my music from my Google Music account from the cloud. It works pretty well.
2) Customization are a very personal thing, so what'ts essential to me might not be essential to you. I would not worry about roms right away. From all the reviews I have seen, the stock build is quite good. So I would start there. We can help you more when you get it to get apps to do stuff when you need, like file browsers, etc. For keyboards I really like Swiftkey X (They have a free beta version of the next version on their forums) It's prediction engine is great. 3) I would guess you might be able to switch the colors of the new version of Touchwiz, I have not held one, only read reviews. You will probably figure it out once you get it. Here is a long video of the new Touchwiz. It actually looks quite nice I think http://www.droid-life.com/2012/06...um=twitter Many developers also like http://rootzwiki.com/index They have a good forum and news too. I would look there for stuff when you get your phone. Also know this is coming down the pipeline. http://rootzwiki.com/news/_/artic...-aokp-r896 Last edited by LiquidRetro; 06-20-2012 at 08:19 AM.. I am sure you wont miss the iOS experience as you are choosing the most advanced and powerful Android smartphone. There was a time when 3.5" was considered to be huge and now, we have smartphones with display as big as 5". I am not a fan of these huge displays but S3 is amazing. It is super sleek and looks a lot better than S2.
Android is customizable and you can alter pretty much everything. |
