New Player in the Tablet world: Microsoft Surface

It looks to be the 1st real player in the Hybrid Tablet-Laptop world...as an owner of the Asus Transformer I can tell you that one leaves much to be desired.

iPad AND Macbook Air replacement?

There are two models / sets of specs...one will be more tablet replacement, cheaper and the other one will be more powerful / expensive / laptop worthy.

The didn't touch nearly enough on the connectivity of the Surface though, and I haven't played around with Win8 enough to get a feel on how that will translate to a laptop/tablet.

Uh.. Most of the Surface features aren't "unique".

- iPad is capable of connecting with printers
- iPad has cases available that double as keyboards
- MS is creating Word/Excel/PP for iOS

Don't know about the printers...I'd assume that is true.

The iPad does not have any that connect through magnets. They are all bluetooth (need to be charged) or...do any plug into the Apple port or are they all bluetooth?

Who knows...maybe this selling well could cause them to withdraw the Office iOS suite? No idea on that either.

But, this thing is running Windows 8. You will have the same experience on your tablet as your desktop. That is unique enough to perk my interest.

looks like a pretty cool option for those looking for a tablet experience when desired, but who also want to run a full OS (to bypass streaming and other limitation of mobile OSs), have the option for USB, and don't want to get walled into a mobile OS garden. i'll probably be getting something similar when my T500 finally dies.

They said "The Surface will be priced like comparable tablets" ($400-$500?) and that the higher spec would be similar to Ultrabooks ($800-$900?). head to head vs. the iPad would be tough...But it is a larger screen with the same thickness and weight, which will help...but I think the biggest bonus would be to just include that keyboard and not charge anything extra for it. Throw in a free upgrade copy of Win8 for the desktop while you are at it to get the whole house on the same platform!

i'd pay a little more than an iPad for a physical, integrated keyboard and a full OS (Pro version), although i'm probably in the minority there. and i wouldn't buy the RT version.
