Has nothing to do with being worried. It's about mitigating risk. Vrbo and home away are really popular so there isn't a need to use craigslist. Craigslist is great for a lot of things...booking vacations isn't one of them. Hate is a strong word... but I really really really don't like you

I have nothing against vrbo, and have used them too, But, the OP is looking at the lower- end of the Maui rental market, and Craigslist's market offerings do tend to be somewhat less expensive. Peace. |

I'm considering a trip in September to Hawaii, and I found the Polynesian Plaza [tripadvisor.com] on TripAdvisor.com the other day. $505 plus taxes for a week's stay, and the reviews I've seen on it are very good. This thread has been good info for me, and I'll keep monitoring it to see what I can learn!

They talk about VBRO on the TA forums a lot, but we booked directly from the Outrigger site and had no problems. I don't understand why more people don't mention this. The Outrigger condos I stayed at (Eldorado, Kapala Villas) have great reviews, no parking fees, no cleaning fees, and it's all booked on their web site.
I was also tired at 8pm every night, up at 4am surfing the web, download pictures from the camera. Sun comes up early, best to go snorkeling at 8am before the crowd arrives. Most activities happen early (tours, snorkeling, summit, RTH). |

So I've been doing some research for the last 2 weeks and here are some money saving tips.
-Search for deals between Tuesday and Thursday. Most vacation and airline deals begin to show up Tuesday morning and run until Thursday. -To see airline price trends checkout bing.com/travel (I know what you're thinking "Bing.com?!?", but their airline predictor is actually very helpful). -If you're looking to get the cheapest prices, vacation packages are the way to go. Sites like Travelocity, Orbitz, Kayak, and Hotwire are great for daily searches. I've found Hotwire to be the most flexible, consistent, and reliable at searching for airline prices. Hotwire also has the special low fare, which offers you a great deal on flights (up to $80 less than regular fares). The only catch is that the flights are long, with up to 2 layovers. Travelocity is great for searching for vacation packages. You can also use coupon code "RETAILMENOT100" for $100 off at check out. I was able to put together a 7 day Maui vacation package with air and hotel at the Royal Kahana for only $2752 using Travelocity.com. This however was more expensive than the Alaskaair.com package I missed out on. The alaska air website will have some awesome vacation deals, and so far they've been by far the cheapest airline. -If you're looking for a more private Hawaii experience check out condos on VRBO.com. Managers will post deals, and you can even ask for deals. A couple of managers have been flexible with prices when I asked. The drawback to renting a condo are the fees. Most managers have cleaning fees, credit card payment fees, and cancellation fees. The cheapest I was able to find for a week with airfare was $3200. The Royal Kahana also offers a condo experience, but for almost $500 less and no fees. Hopes this helps someone. Please understand I'm just sharing some of the knowledge I've picked up over the last few weeks while trying to save money, and I'm in no way an expert. |
