THANKS OP!
The instructions to put it together at first isn't that easy to understand but I did not have any hard time putting it together. So far no problem with the unit. I got the extended 2 years warranty from Sams Club so hopefully it's worth it~ |

We had two different portable AC models in the past. I dont suggest buying these. They dont cool very much, need to be constantly drained of water, very noisy, and get hot. One of the unit started to leak all over. We ended up getting mini-split A/C systems instead as these are about $1500 installed and qualify for energy rebates.
I would take a 5000 BTU window unit over a 12,000 BTU portable unit !! the window units work much better in actually cooling down the area, less noisy, and less hassle. |

Buy if only Absolutely necessary
Agree wholeheartedly with some of the posts above. Only buy a portable a/c if you absolutely cannot install a window unit. They are inefficient, wasteful, loud. No where near the cooling capacity of a window unit. I had a 12,000 btu that did not cool a small studio (450 sq ft) more than a couple of degrees, had to return it. Hope this helps someone decide.

Got one last night and, knowing what I was getting into, I'm satisfied. Incidentally, my Sam's said on the phone they didn't have it in stock, but they had it out on the floor by the time I went (person didn't bother to check in back).
It's surely not as efficient as a window unit, but it does cool down my roughly 300 sq ft bedroom well (from about 86 degrees to 72 last night). The noise is higher than a window unit, but not horrendous. As for leaks and draining, from what I can gather on the web, this model effectively exhausts the humidity and may not need to be drained at all, so there's effectively no storage to leak. I didn't want a window unit b/c: 1. Don't like the looks from the outside or inside (you lose more sunlight with the window unit in the way); and 2. I wanted to be able to move it from room to room (bedroom to study) relatively easily. I do wish that the window insert was engineered to be better sealed, but I can rework that. |

Comfort is more important than looks. Light bill is too.... Last edited by empiretc; 07-03-2012 at 10:04 PM.. |
