BenQ S6 Tablet PC with 4.8" Touchscreen, Wi-Fi, MicroSD Slot and Windows XP $60

So after a full day of solving errors, I finally have a working copy of Windows XP on my Benq S6. Here

is a quick guide to getting it on yours...


Please read the whole guide first you risk Bricking your device from an improper BIOS flash and certain steps are important to avoid BSODs while installing...


First, things you will need:

- USB Keyboard
- USB 2.0 HUB with at least two ports (powered hub a plus)
- USB 2.0 Drive 2GB + (BACKUP! It will be formated soon!)


PART I: UPDATING THE BIOS

Software needed:
- FreeDOS bootable on your usb drive @ http://rufus.akeo.ie/
- https://rapidshare.com/#!download...|39391|0|0

STEP 1. Rufus will allow you to make a bootable FreeDos USB drive.
Run Rufus and select your USB drive from the "Device" drop down menu. Again, make sure it has

been cleared of any information you would life saved. Use the default settings and click start.

STEP 2. Unzip the file "XP_Driver_Release.7z" and copy the BIOS and it's self contained install file

(0303_1783_33103_Customer.exe) to the root of the flash drive. The USB drive is now ready to update

the BIOS.

STEP 3. MAKE SURE YOUR BENQ S6 IS FULLY CHARGED AND CONNECTED TO AC ADAPTOR.

STEP 4. Connect the mini USB to USB adaptor that was supplied with your BENQ S6. The connected your

USB hub to that and then connect the USB drive and USB keyboard to that.

STEP 5. Boot up the Benq S6 and let FreeDOS load. When at the command prompt (you will see the C:/ at

the bottom of the splash screen.) Run the BIOS install file by typing 0303 and pressing the tab key to

autocomplete. Press enter to run and let it finish. When it is completed, long press the power button

to turn off your S6.

PART II: INSTALLING WINDOWS XP

Software needed:
- a copy of Windows XP that has *SATA drivers*
- Wintoflash software available @ http://wintoflash.com/download/en/

STEP 1. Extract WinToFlash and the Run WinToFlash.exe

STEP 2. Go to the "Task" tab and choose task type: "Transfer Windows xp/2003 setup to USB drive" and

hit run.

STEP 3. In the "Basic Parameters" tab choose the file system to be "FAT16 LBA" This limits the space

available to the operating system but is needed to greatly increase transfer speed issues.

STEP 4. Choose the path to your copy of windows XP- It cannot be an ISO file. If it is, you must mount

the ISO using Daemon tools and choose the path to your emulated drive.

STEP 5. Choose the location of your USB drive and press "Run"

STEP 6. Wait til its finished, Safely eject the USB drive, and stick it back in the USB hub connected

to your Benq S6.

Step 7. Start up the S6 and do the first option for installation when prompted by the menu.

From here it it like any other windows install. When you are required to reboot you will go to the

second option given by the prompt to finish setting up the XP install.

Using this guide will avoid error I had using an external CD drive and some other software. The S6 has

a SATA connected SSD and SATA drivers are essential. Using the tab, alt+tab, enter and arrow keys,

there is no requirement to have a mouse durring install. However, if you have a powered Hub there is

no reason not to connect a mouse.

2GB of HDD space is enough for a XP install so if you happen to find a copy xp that contains the SATA

drivers you can always strip it down later for more space and page file.

PART III: DRIVERS

This step is well documented in "XP_Driver_Release.7z" so access the the instruction file from there for this step.

There's some interesting stuff I posted, such as making right-clicking less frustrating. It's a very good read, and I think it would be very helpful sharing this info with everyone who bought this S6 too. I don't like seeing people say they wasted money on this device, it's a very pocketable PC that really, would have never been this cheap in a perfect world, but it was and I'm glad to be a part of it.
