I can't speak for the Nikon, but if you are just beginning to learn how DSLRs function and get into the manual side of photography, then I recommend the T3. I have had it for about a year now and I love it. It'll get you hooked on wanting better lenses, but you can take some great images with the T3 body and the kit lens.

When it comes to choosing between Nikon/Canon one thing to think about is what do your friends/family have. If you have the same brand, then you can share lenses with each other. The lens is what is going to last, not the body.

I've had a Sony a300 for a few years and it gave out on me so that's why I'm in the market for another DSLR. I just did not use it enough to justify buying a high end DSLR.

I dunno...I'm a bit of a beginner too and I regret buying a rebel. If I could go back and buy my first DSLR again I'd buy an old 40D or if had a saved a bit more an older full framed camera. Especially if you're thinking about becoming a bit more serious with photography.
