Thread Details

Went to my local Best Buy store today and they had the Nikon D90 new on a clearance for $599!!! Original price is $1,199. They didn't have any in stock but they could order one in store. This is a VERY YMMV!

Thanks & Reps to OP and me jmuralinux Smilie

For everyone who is asking how to find the price of the item in local stores please have the following tips:

1. Just go to your nearest bestbuy and ask them to check for this item in stock. Just ask them what's the current price in that store. They will obliviously say "it's out of stock or discontinued" but will confirm the price. Then ask them to check the nearby stores. When they do that ask them what are the stores have the item for 599. You can tell them 'I just wanted to know if I can find a at least an open box, even if it says out of stock and going to the stores that has for lower price will make more sense' like that. You can even ask for a printed receipt which contains the list of stores and prices.

OR

2. Go to bestbuy.com and search for the nearby stores using inventory checker selecting any item. Get the phone number of each store and note them down with the addresses. Call each store and give the SKU and ask the price of the item first and ask them whether they have it in stock or even a display model (just to get the price). NEVER ASK WHETHER THEY WILL DO THE PM OR RETURN AND RE-BUY OR CREDIT CARD SWAP This will shutdown your chances and others chances very early.

Just know the price, go to the store, look for a charming CSR girl and bring the receipt to do a CC swap and tell them that you have a better cash back in this new card (if it is required) and politely talk to them. If it goes wrong, silently come out and do not create any scene and go to the same store in the noon or evening and ask another CSR. It will definitely happen with any one CSR smoothly.

This is an awesome LEGIT Deal! Go ahead and give Best Buy a call and see if they have it in your area. Cool

  • All you to have to find a store that's selling it for 599. How? Go to any Best Buy and ask them to check SKU: 8975184, try to ask at a terminal where you can look over their shoulder/maybe a terminal on the floor
  • If that store has it in stock, you are good to go .. just buy it with them and move on to the next thing!
  • If they don't have it in stock anymore ask them where all they could be available in neighboring zip codes. Their system will show the availability (may be at 1199 or 599 - who cares!).
  • Have the store where you are at showing for 599 to do an OMS (Order Management System) so you can pick it up at the store showing in stock. They will call the new store to verify and ask them to put it aside for you at guest services.
  • You pay at your current store and just take the sheet (rep will give it to you) with you and pick it up at the new store!
  • Say Thank you to the REP and to the OP
  • No go in South florida

the d5100 doesnt even come close to the d90, the lens alone on the d90 the 18-105 is about 300 bucks as one poster stated the 18-55 doesnt come close to it. and for a starter kit the d90 would be awesome for that price

Went into local Best Buy and had them look it up on their computer - where it shows how many each nearby store has. It showed $599 and although they had none in stock they were able to order with free shipping to my house. $655 total with tax in Chicago area.
And there it is - email from Best Buy "your item is unavailable to ship". Bummer.

I think ppl are making story without any solid information, this seems to be fake deal to me. Not a single person has show any solid proof so far.

You my friend are misinformed or a troll. The D90 may not be weather sealed but it is one of Nikons best consumer cameras made. Go down to the D5100 and have no AF motor, No Auto Fp, No cls commander, 1 command wheel, and you can't even lock your focus point. Go up to the D7000 you have oil spots, back focus and iffy autofocus...

Check flickr stats... #1 Nikon camera for uploads... http://www.flickr.com/cameras/nik...ank#models

The D90 is the red headed stepchild of the Nikon line. Go up or down (D7000/D5100) but don't buy this overpriced, all plastic, no gaskets POS.

Thanks for a great deal OP and repped... figured it was time to upgrade the old Nikon and can't beat this deal since I can still use all my current lenses as well... Know others have been looking for some more solid info to help them get this deal, so here you go...

Was able to go to a store in NJ tonight where the price was clearance to $599 and get them to order it for me from another local store that had it in stock via the OMS system. Paid in the initial store and picked up in store #2 (where it was still $1199 and not on clearance) about 15 minutes later, no issues at all.

And to make it a little slicker I had the 3x reward zone points coupon for RZ silver members which means i should get an additional ~$35 back in RZ certificates as well on top of the great price assuming the coupon works with the OMS which it seemed to scan fine.

Hope others can get in on this deal as it was smooth and simple for me to get them to place the order at the initial store. Did the pick up as I figured they wouldn't have any time to change their mind between paying and then picking it up a soon after and am home with the camera now.

enjoy it. it's a great great camera. i got mine for 50% off when it first came out back in the glory days of bing cb. i'm still very happy with it to this date and haven't had an urge or desire to replace it with any of the newer nikon offerings.

So if my store shows unavailable, but price is $599 in their system can I have one ordered for me to be delivered to my house?

If you have something against the D7000 by all means get a D300S or D300. Unless you actually can get one for $599 with a decent lens, skip the cheapo all plastic made for amateurs only D90. But then again, only a noob amateur would be impressed with a D90.

Was given bunch of BS today, but no camera. Local store still shows $1,199, while some stores around show $599, but no availability. How hard (or simple) is it to order one at $599 store and pick it up locally, as described above - pretty standard or YMMV?

kinda amateurish question:

Nikon D5100 or Nikon D90

got D5100 a couple of months and was able to grab D90 for 635 (incl taxes).

confused!!! SLR experts, please advise!

OMS is YMMV, since d90 skus are "deleted" (not restocked/discontinued) at the stores for $599. The $599 stores aren't receiving more shipments, and are only supposed to sell off what they have. The employee still has the option to OMS it, but it's not really "allowed", so YMMV. Price adjustment will be a no go because the system does not allow for it on this item, so as a last resort, but it at $1199 then just do a return + rebuy at a $599 store.
