So post-half year assessment, how is everyone doing with their laptops so far on this model??
I only actively started using recently when I took a month and half trying to build my very first desktop and this has been a good replacement for time being.... No real problems so far, haven't done crazy gaming yet nor any live broadcasting on it yet but will do so along with my new desktop for a dual broadcast channel... |

So it's been a good half-year since I purchased this computer. So far...everything seems to be going well. Gaming on this laptop is not a problem at all. I've played Batman Arkham Series, Devil May Cry (2013), Need For Speed, Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Hitman Absolution, and so much more. All of these games have performed flawlessly. I also have not done any mods to the laptop either. Overall its been great.

I just did a clean windows 7 installation on my new Samsung 256gb 840 pro. A warning for people thinking about replacing their HDD w/ a sata III SSD - this laptop is sata II. Even with this limitation, however, I'm getting 30s boot times and near instant app loading.
I've been able to achieve stable cpu undervolts way below the stock voltages. Now the battery lasts much longer, temps have dropped considerably, and the fan is much more quiet. I'm hoping to do some light overclocking soon. Love this laptop!

I even reinstalled it to Windows 7 Ultimate, replaced RAM to 8 GB and replaced HDD with Samsung 830 128GB SSD. Though it gets me worried with a question mark if I want another laptop and replace it with this that's an Intel i7, better graphics and resolution than this before my possible going-away overseas trip in the summer.... Or maybe I carry two laptops with me wherever I go, one with this laptop + Windows 7, and my other more expensive laptop with better specs but Windows 8... I never used Windows 8 so I wouldn't know how much better it is... |

Well I have had no issues with this laptop since I bought it. I have had a Sandisk SSD (120 gb) in it, but the wife needed it more on her older system than me. I did have the SSD fail on me, so I got it RMA'd and they sent me the Extreme version back and it has worked fine in my wife's laptop. This laptop does everything that I ask of it (DVD burning, Games, Browsing, etc.). I probably use this laptop more than most people do, since it's my main PC. I do have a decent older desktop PC, but it's upstairs and only gets used for basic computing needs. I do plan on getting a 240-256 gb SSD to put in this laptop, since I found that the 120-128 gb SSD was a bit too small for my needs. My main restriction on size is that I rip DVD movies onto this laptop and that takes a bit of space each time (~4 gb each). I do eventually burn the DVD's and then wipe them off down the road (I stream them to my WiFi enabled TV, so that is a bonus).
I'm in the process of wanting to build up a HTPC or a data storage PC for my movie collection (>300 movies on DVD's), so this laptop is my main PC for now and will more than likely be until my next upgrade a few years down the road. Sorry for the long post, but I thought that most people would like to know what this cheaper laptop can do. So in short: * I do some gaming on it (CSS, Everquest, TF2, and some older ones) * I rip DVD's to HD and use for streaming and also eventually burn them to DVD's * Do all office related tasks (Word, Excel, etc.) * Surf the web and also watch/stream from the web my favorite shows. Things that I will definitely get for upgrades: * Upgrade the 5400 rpm HD to at least a 240-256 gb SSD (already tested a 120 gb SSD with no issues) * I've already upgraded to 8 gb's of 1600 mHz RAM and have no more need to get more RAM. * I will stick with Windows 7 (I have used the Ultimate version without issues - currently using the original Windows 7 that came with the system). * I would consider using a HD Caddy, if I could keep it during boot up and not have to fiddle with it after boot up (read that the current BIOS version doesn't support a HD in the DVD slot during boot up, but will recognize it after boot up, if you have it initially disconnected - slid out of slot). |

No issues with the G.Skill set
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6820231472 G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSQ CPUz lists them at 1333 mHz speed w/8,8,8,23 timings. I'm not sure if there is really any noticeable difference, but I bought these with the mindset that if I could use them in a later laptop I would. Currently I'm running back on the 120 gb SSD only. I don't know if I'll go with a HD caddy just yet, since I use the DVD for ripping of movies and also to backup some things (under 4.7 gb). The only thing I wish I had was a bigger resolution screen, but at this price point I'm fine with it. I can always output to a bigger screen, but sorta defeats the point when I'm mobile
