I see a lot of comments relating to gaming, but how good would this be for general use? Seems anything good for gaming, should be better than good for general use. Don't do much laptop researching, but a relative is looking to upgrade and looking for the best options in the 300-500 range. General web surfing, office programs, etc. Should I pull the trigger on this, or what other option are out there to consider. Thanks in advance.

I hate when this happens. Gaming laptop hit the price I'm looking for, but now I'm hesitant because of the AMD chip. Is this a solid enough deal that I need to bite or is it worth continuing to wait? UGH!

AMD CPUs game just fine and mobile LLano OCs like a beast. Get this now --you're not going to find anything *new* that beats it for this price.

For general use, this computer is more than enough. I'm sure people don't really need an Intel i7 quad core or something like that unless you're program really needs that much power.

The only thing I would suggest is upgrading the ram to 8gb (when you see a decent deal on rams) and possibly the hard drive (SSD would be great). Those 2 upgrade will make any laptop a good experience since hard drive is the slowest component usually.

I bought the Asus K53TA from last year deal ($450 from BB) and it served me well, not much issues and was great for general use. I rarely game, used it mostly for videos and web browsing and word documents.

my opinion above, but quite true for general usage.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I doubt a LLano unit can ACFX with a southern islands GPU. 7670m and 7770m are supposed to pair with Trinity A8s and A10s --I don't see it matching well with a LLano A6.

AMD APUs are decent, good enough for most. Unless you dislike AMD, I don't see why not go with this laptop with it's dedicated graphics. It would probably be hard to wait for an Intel i3/i5 w/ a dedicated GPU at this price. It should be fast enough without overclocking but you have the option to do so with AMD usually or at least from my experience using AMD A6-3400 + 6650M (Asus K53TA).

If you really *need* that kind of power why would someone buy a laptop in the first place? The entire concept of a mobile WS still puzzles me...

Mobility on the go. You don't always have access to a desktop everywhere you go. You can't really haul around a mid-size tower desktop + a monitor for work and stuff.

Assymetric xfire in AMD dual graphics laptops never really worked most of the time. Very few games play with satisfactory results. Most of the time xfire results in microstutter in games. So best results are experienced with single gpu configuration where most of the gpu processing is from dedicated card (7670m or 6650m in the previous AMD laptops).
Few games that have advantage of assymetric xfire are: Deus Ex and some people mentioned Dirt 3.

But this laptop should game well (30-50FPS) on medium settingsWink; it's currently one of the best deals on a bargain gaming notebook.

IIRC ACFX only works in DX11. It's a first gen tech that wasn't able to reuse the code from HCFX.

Don't get me wrong. I get why people like photographers, contractors, engineers and whatnot have machines to take with them --I myself have a mobile WS, but it's far more hassle than it's worth to have something like the Clevo X79 box of doom. I prefer having a weaker machine to do the quick and dirty in the feild/meetings and doing the heavy lifting on a tower.

My last question, as someone inexperienced with OCing on notebooks, how safe is it to do so when you can't add any aftermarket cooling solutions and such? I'd definitely be interested in doing so, but only have experience in the desktop realm.

It's not bad OC'ing AMD APUs. Stock should be fine since once it gets too hot, the CPU actually throttles down to like 800MHz to cool down or at least according to my OC'ing experience on AMD A6-3400m. A notebook cooler might help though. I recently opened up my Asus K53TA to repaste the thermal compound and seems to help a lot more but probably not worth doing it when the laptop is still in warranty.

A shame this is 15.6" and 1366x768. If it were 17.3" and 1600x900 this would be an amazing deal. Hopefully AMD somehow fixes the APU+GPU crossfire problem. Its been broken for over a year. Massive stuttering in almost every game, etc.

it will crossfire

this 7670m is just a rebadged 6650m. same thing as the asus K53TK -

get these llanos while you still can, because trinity sucks at multithread and can't be overclocked.
