Petco $1 per gallon fish tanks for 10, 20, 20l, 39, 40b, 55 **rectangular only**

I just picked up a 40g yesterday. There was one 55g left and a bunch of the 29g.

I am totally new to fish, aquarium's, etc. I just bought the tank, no other accessories. I know I need a light and from what I've read, I should probably get a glass cover to prevent the fish from jumping out and my cats from putting their paws in. Anyone have any suggestions on where to look, besides the obvious choice of Petco or Petsmart? Wanting a good deal and it seems as those a glass cover and light will cost more than the $50 I spent on the tank.

Also, any other suggestions on filters, accessories, decoration would be appreciated. I have not decided what kinds of fish to get or if I want to do fresh or salt. Fresh seems like a better choice for a beginner, correct?

A door/windows place should be able to provide the cover in glass or acrylic. Get 3-4 commercial T5 light bulbs tor that tank. I prefer two T8 bulbs and a 55-60 gal tank. You can get the 4-Foot 2-Light T8 Fluorescent Ceiling Fixture at Ace hardware for about $37. Add $10 for two bulbs. Look for a bulb with 6500K rating to provide a more natural daylight color.

Drs. Foster & Smith has the $34 Aquaclear 70 filter and $20 Jager 100W heater (free shipping if over $49). You'll probably want the $8 large siphon Kleen for housekeeping.

Most of these stuffs can be purchased on Craig List if you have time to wait for the deal to surface.

I prefer a fresh water tank. If you can find someone local that will give you the existing foam media in the tank, then you can put the foam in the Aquaclear and add new fish without the need to "cycle" the aquarium. Otherwise, search the net for various ways of cycling an aquarium.

Once cycled, I like to keep a school of cardinal tetras. I would change 10% of the water daily for two weeks with a new tank. This will prevent the buildup of harmful ammonia that can kill the fish. You can add live plants (java fern or val) after three months. Maintain lighting for 4-8 hours per day. Find out the maximum length of each fish and do not exceed 35" for that 40 gal tank.

Change 15% of the water once a month using the Siphon Kleen.
