Any discounts for A+?

I had to take the CompTia A+ test for work. I was surprised how much old tech was on the test. Since I was building computers in the 90's and servicing printers it was a cake walk. If you do not know older tech from the late 90's and early 2k's, study!

I also took the Network+, I took a class and throught it was fun. When I hire, I put much more stock in the Network+ then the A+. Network+ shows you have some knowledge of networking, security, vpn and some basic IT from the business side and not just tech. It's still entry level top view stuff. I take experience over a cert.

I've seen a LOT of people fail the network+ exam. Its no picnic for people new to networking. Memorizing subnetting is hard for a lot of people.

One benefit of net+ is if you get it you can slide right into a CCNA exam with just a few more weeks of study since the material is quite similar with the add on of IOS in cisco. This is how I did it - I only spent about 2 weeks on CCNA material after my net+ and passed the CCNA quite easily having never even seen a cisco router.

What kind of job are you doing now?(with your certification)

I think about going the the same route...

I guess I'm backward.

I got my Security+ first, and I studied for 2 weeks and passed. It was fairly easy, a lot of memorization. You should know a lot of it already with experience in the computer field.

Studying for Network+ now, will be taking it next month. Also, no, it does say when you took the test, but it does not say which version you took. Since now you have to renew it every three years, it does not matter which test you take. All you put on your resume is "CompTIA Network+ Certification, certified xx/xx/xxxx, expires xx/xx/xxxx". So no, it does not matter which version you take.

The older version was published in 2008 I believe, so it's not OLD OLD stuff, the study material is a lot cheaper for it though.


When I find someone who want to take my bet and pay for my A+, I'll just walk in right then and take it, no study required.

you know, there is a place called exam collection that that's all you need to pass Sec+/Net+

seriously, those class are so bogus and you just need a piece of paper. if this is CCNP or VCP, okay. but with it come to compTIA, their class is a joke.

Yah. I passed a microsoft test using examcollection. After that, I found all certifications a joke and really just a piece of paper IT people can show HR their qualifications.

Nothing. I'm an electrical engineer in management. IT certs are just super easy to get and you can make enough to live off. WHen inbetween jobs in the past I've gone the IT route because its about $25/hr minimum with just a CCNA which takes only a month to get tops.

If you don't cheat, certifications are a good thing. The MS ones are really tough (my 70-646 is scheduled for next week and I passed 70-642 last month).

Comptia tests however are pretty much a joke. They cover general information only. It's better than nothing, but I would expect every IT person to have that knowledge without their certs. I have security+, project+, database+, A+, and net+. They all cover basic terminology but don't actually get into how to apply that knowledge to specific systems.

For full disclosure, I have 12+ years of IT experience. My MS certs are final exams for my college courses through WGU.

I'm currently in tech school for the air force and we are required to take a 10 day A+ course for the job i'm in. We have a pretty high pass rate on it (90+ i would estimate) but i wouldn't call it easy for people totally new to technology. You have 12 years of experience so that is probably why you think they are so easy. Airmen in some other jobs take sec+ in the same amount of time and don't find that one as easy as A+. For what the cert is for (help desk/support mainly) its very useful information. I would take advantage of this deal but i should be able to get the certs for free anyway once i'm out of tech school with my GI bill.

I agree, but the problem is that the material covered on most comptia exams is so generic. If it only takes you 10 days to learn it, that says a lot. I would not hire someone to support our computers with only 10 days of generic knowledge. The whole point of the exam is to help those who did not study the computer field show that they have a "better than most" knowledge of how computers work.

If you can get a free/low cost Comptia exam, go for it. It's better than nothing. But it's just slightly better than nothing.
