The perspective that she should have been more cautious is just one that gives me an icky feeling. Should Rosa Parks have sat in the back of the bus, because it was safer? Should we all just accept things the way they are and remain scared instead of taking back our rights as citizens? Should people not stand up for their rights just because there could be danger? It was her choice, but she did not DESERVE it. She did, however, change those kid's lives and is a role model for how to be a strong and unafraid woman.

She defended herself to a degree. She told the press that once one of them pulled a knife she knew she had to try to cool things down. What is not awesome is that she seems, like you, to be in denial of how serious that situation was and the overall intention of those guys.

I never said she deserved it. It's wonderful that you're into feminism and hopefully you volunteer for projects like Take Back the Night. As someone who has been assaulted, who has been stalked more than once (one went to jail thank God), as someone who likes to be prepared, as a person living near parks where rape and assault is very common, and as someone living in what many people call the Serial Killer state, I wouldn't go jogging alone when the likelihood of having help nearby would be low.

But I'm also older and have lived on the street. I would never assume that carrying any weapon, either my fists or my gun, would automatically protect me. No one can avoid being a target of a crime but you can do things to reduce your risk.

I don't think her point is what should or shouldn't be. It's more what just "is" in some areas. If I decide to run though Compton one night and I get assaulted, while I may not have deserved it, I really should have known better. To a certain degree it really is my fault for going someplace that I shouldn't have, though.

You're right about not knowing what the area she was running in is like. If it's a generally safe area, then yeah, the line between "right to be there" and "good idea to be there" gets fuzzier.

If you're worried about her hitting a minor, don't be. Many areas have laws on the books that minors of a particular age (typically 15 yrs old) or above lose their defensive rights as a minor the second they are involved in a violent crime.

Stepping back once the knife came out doesn't mean that she "defended herself to a degree". Just because you've stepped back doesn't mean you're retreating or conceding. She stepped back strategically. She used nearby objects as a shield and disarmed her attackers. She very much defended herself from this attack, she did not run away.

SMH. so all females need to jog in pairs? lol what land do you live in? haha. my younger sister jogs around my neighborhood all by herself all the time and i don't even have to worry one bit. not everyone lives in murder downtown central park. lol. you remind me of my mom who always tells me to close my garage door whenever i need to run to the gas station across the street for 5 minutes. paranoid much?
