The best picture quality is Plasma. I won't even recommend an LCD TV since they all suck IMO.

I agree. Plasma is all I'd consider with what's available now.

I encourage you to look more into plasmas. Much of your concern with them doesn't apply to newer plasmas.

For similar price points
1. Plasma gives better color reproduction compared to LCD - relevant if you are watching movie primarily
2. LCD will provide faster refresh rates with less chances of burn in compared to Plasma - relevant if you are watching sports or playing games primarily.
3. Energy cost differences are not significant - what is significant is the weight of the TV. Plasma needs a sturdier footing compared to LCD.

Size of your TV should be determined by watching distance - sit less than 10' for 47" and less than 12' for 55".

Whoa! Where do you get that LCD refresh rates are better than Plasma? You have it reversed. I have yet to see an LCD in ANY price range that doesn't have motion blur. I have never seen a Plasma tv that HAS motion blur.

There is NO spec on an LCD that is better than a plasma.

Those distances are too far away. Those distances were more applicable with standard definition displays since sitting too close would cause the picture to appear blurry. Taken to the extreme, the individual pixels could be seen which would degrade the picture quality tremendously.

With HDTVs, those issues are no longer applicable. The guiding force behind most home theater enthusiasts' decisions is to buy the biggest screen they can afford. However, a more scientific approach taken by fewer home theater enthusiasts is to but a screen size that, when coupled with their viewing distance, will yield a viewing angle of between 30-degrees (recommended by SMPTE) and 40-degrees (recommended by THX).

For a 30-degree viewing angle, you can easily figure out your optimal viewing distance by multiplying the diagonal measurement of your display by 1.6.

For a 40-degree viewing angle, you can easily figure out your optimal viewing distance by multiplying the diagonal measurement of your display by 1.2.

You can also back into which display size you "should" get by rearranging the equation if you have a predetermined viewing distance.

Oops my fault - refresh rate is better in Plasma - but burn in can be a problem. Especially if you are having a logo at any corner while watching any sports channel or if you have a cross hair all day long while playing any games.

Weight and burn in are the only disadvantages.
