please help with my pc build
This will be my first build. My basic experience is I have swapped optical drives, memory, psu and video card before. I am tired of replacing prebuilts every 2-3 years and think this way I can easier swap out parts that fail. This will be used for mostly as an htpc. I also want to try pc gaming. There is some light avchd editing as well. The following parts come from microcenter. Intel core I5 3570k sku: 425470 Asrock z77 extreme 4 mobo sku: 380550 Bundled for $280 Corsair vengeance series 16gb Ddr3-1600 sku: 401489 $109.99 ocz technology 750 watt fatal1ty series modular arson power supply sku: 693671 $79.99 ar Diamond 7770pe51g amd radeon he 7770 1024 gdr5 pcie 3.0 16x video card sku: 399626 $129.99 ar Western digital caviar black 1tb 7,200 rpm SATA 6.0gb/s 3.5" he wd1002faex sku: 609180 $124.99 LG 12x blue-ray burner sku: 224352 $79.99 Thermaltake chaser mk-1 full tower atx sku: 815878 $129.99 ar Thermaltake bigwater 760 plus dual drive bay liquid cooling system sku: 563676 $119.99 I think that's $1055 after rebates. I will get windows 7 from amazon. What else am I missing, is everything compatible and will this build be fast? sorry about no links as I'm posting from my phone. Thanks. |

If it were me and I had maxed out my budget, I would swap the liquid cooling for an SSD in a heartbeat.
Speed is way more important to me than some fancy shmancy liquid cooling system. Naturally, if you don't mind spending a bit more, then you could just add an SSD to your present selection. If you have an SSD in there, then yes, it WILL be fast. |

Maybe the liquid cooling decision was made for quiet PC purpose though the radiator fan sounds pretty loud and it will be mounting near the edge of the chassis instead of inside the chassis like air cooling.
I like the fact that my $300 build has more powerful 3D graphics (radeon 6870) than this for gaming. http://slickdeals.net/f/4763118-C...st51077660 a full tower case and 16gb ram for htpc? lol even 8gb is way overkill for running things with database as back-end (well I got 8gb for my setup because it was cheaper than 4gb memory). Hey, here are my 2 cents. 1) This is overkill and beyond for an HTPC. 2) I agree with the above post, get rid of the liquid cooling system. Here are the changes I would make: Swap the power supply for this one: PC Power and Cooling 600W power supply. I almost exclusively use these guys as the build quality is absolutely top notch. +$10 http://www.amazon.com/PC-Power-Co...+600+watts Swap out the cooling for this guy: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus $25.71 (119.99-25.71= -94.28) Add this HD: Crucial 128GB 6g SSD +115 http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-2-5...=128gb+ssd Replace HD with this one: Seagate Barracude green 89.99 (109.99-89.99= -20) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...682214876 A full tower is HUGE. For a HTPC setup you should consider something more compact. I would, at a minimum, go with something like this: Antec 300 mid tower case (49.99-129.99=-80) http://www.amazon.com/Antec-Three...B000GQM and your memory you can get for 89.99 from newegghttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...682023314 Also, I have had REALLY bad luck with diamond labeled video cards. Caveat emptor. consider the Sapphire labeled one from newegg for 119.99 ARhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...681410296 so if you made the changes I suggested your price would change from 1055 to 1055-10-20-80-20+115-94.28+10 = 955.72 With the above changes your system would run faster and you would still be able to do a bit of overclocking if you wish. |

Think you need to further define what you want this PC to do...
Gaming vs HTPC vs Editing are very different needs. HTPC... Important... LARGE HARDRIVES (For all the files) Mini-ATX Low sound, Low power consumption 24/7 Small Nice Small Case to blend with other components <--- Could be the most expensive part of a good HTPC Not important... Processor Video card Ram Seems to me you don't know what you really want. You are just going by what you heard was "cool" Its either a general PC, High end PC... gaming PC or HTPC not all four. IMO spending a $1000 or more (as in your case) on any PC nowadays is CRAZY...overkill for 99.999% of users. That was different years ago...when you HAD to spend $1000... now everything is so damn fast... save the $$$. Quit getting enamored by specs and think about what you need it to do. Otherwise it's a complete waste of money better spent on other things. My personal opinion is HTPC's are a waste of electricity... get a streaming device. Build yourself a GOOD all around PC. Spend money on the Power Supply, Monitor and Video Card if you want to game... get an SSD too (at least for the OS and programs) Find a decent bang for buck Mobo/CPU combo. That will service you and most user needs for years. Its beyond stupid to spend more than you have to... I work with many many new systems i3, i5, i7 they are NOT much better than my four year old PC for most any task. Money down RAT HOLE. The PC market has matured and has been that way since Core2Duo. Congrats on wanting to build your own... but again it only makes sense on either the real low end or high end. The middle you are better served going with pre-fab from a cost standpoint. Ok. Thanks for the feedback. Here are some revisions.
I5-3570k $190 Asrock extreme 4 $80 Pc power and cooling silencer mk iii $60 Corsair vengeance 8gb (2x4gb) $57 Dvd drive $17 Sandisk extreme 120gb ssd $100 I have a seagate barracuda 1tb hard drive from another pc Saphire 11201-00-20g radeon hd 7770 $120 Nzxt phantom 410 $80 Cooler master hyper 212 EVO $37 So I'm looking at $741 plus applicable taxes for hardware. Are microcenter's 2 year replacement plans worth $10 on the mobo and $20 on the cpu? This will be mostly for gaming. Watching video when I don't feel like firing up an optoma hd70. And light avchd editing. The case right now is my biggest uncertainty. It will be on a desk about 5 feet behind an av Rack in my ht setup. Size isn't a concern. I would like to spend under $100 but get something as dust resistant as possible with decent airflow and possibly a "cool" window. The phantom 410 doesn't seem to like it would be that good with the dust issue without adding filters. And the bottom filter does not slide out and may be inconvenient to access. |
