Dell Vostro laptop sound problem

Win7 pro 64-bit

Started happening few days ago. Observed it on youtube first, that video plays fine but the sound goes mute after 25-30 secs or so. I thought it might be the browser then switched to IE and Chrome but issue persists.

Now even in VLC when playing videos the sound goes kaput after few seconds.

If I hit the mute/unmute button on the laptop the sound will come back and then mute again after few secs. Same behavior if I do mute/unmute from the system tray icon.

The first thing I would try is to uninstall the audio driver and see if it still happens with the Windows generic drivers, and naturally, would go to the Dell website to download the audio driver again, in case mine was corrupt.
