WARNING: You may receive a previously opened (returned?) unit. Also keep in mind that Abe's of Maine is not a Sony certified online retailer, so you may encounter warranty difficulties, especially if the camera has been used previously (and Sony apparently doesn't give you any way of figuring out the shutter actuation counts).

Conclusion - Pros

Very good JPEG output quality
Very good build quality
Support for excellent OLED EVF module
Support for SLT Alpha mount lenses through the optional LA-EA2 adapter
Easy to use but versatile iAuto mode
Wider range of ISO sensitivity settings available in Auto ISO mode (up to ISO 3200)
Good, clear live view magnification (particularly useful for using non E-mount lenses)
Useful built-in user guide (Shooting Tips)
Addition of Picture Effects to PASM shooting modes
Excellent video recording quality
Full manual video exposure control (Aperture, Shutter speed, Exposure comp.)

Conclusion - Cons

Operation is very different in photo creativity modes compared to PASM modes - may be confusing for ambitious novices.
No external microphone input (Sony does offer an optional screw on mic that plugs into the accessory port)
Touchscreen offers little additional operational benefit
Limited native lens selection compared to some competing ILC systems.

Cowboom is selling the silver Sony NEX-5N with 18-55mm Lens for $526.99 (used):

But how does the NEX-5N compare to the newer and similarly priced NEX-F3?

Recently the sony store was selling both for $649.

I am interested in buying a small mirror-less but decent camera with removable lens, and like the Sony NEX series since it reportedly has a big sensor and is okay in low-light conditions. But I am not a camera expert and don't really know which model or which manufacturer is best.

I'd go with a 5N for the same price unless you must have a built in flash. The F3 is the new model in the NEX 3 line. The 5N is the current model in the NEX 5 line. It's one model line up. While the original 3 and 5 were very similiar, they diverge with the C3 and the 5N. In many ways the F3 brought the 3 line back closer to the 5 but the 5N is still better. So if there's a choice between the two at the same price and having a built in flash and flip around screen are not #1 and #2 on the list of must haves, get the 5N.

To be honest, I think you can do better. I've seen ones go by on CL for $400-$425. If this is your first camera of this sort, why not just get a 1st gen NEX 3. It's still a great camera and some Sears stores still have it in the $200 range.

Positive. More than the retail bundle in fact for the $425 one. That one had a bag and 2 batteries. I know of a store with a 5n kit for $475. Don't ask me where. I'm waiting for it to get cheaper. I only paid $125 for my cheapest NEX 3. So I'm thinking a good price for a 5n is $250.

A lot of knuckleheads in the SF Bay Area (including San Francisco, Oakland, Silicon Valley, etc.) are also asking for even more, like this joker that want $650.

Yes, this will be my first serious camera, but I don't necessary want a low-end model, or I might as well continue with my point-and-shoot.

It seems that cowboom is not the best choose, and yes I can wait till the winter for the new NEX-5F, but I do want to buy a decent camera before my the December holidays. Hopefully the NEX-5F will be released before Thanksgiving and it will be discounted in a black-friday sale.
