Dish Network's Free Roku New Owners thread to discuss tech, channels and other useful tips.

Superocean 2,794 July 2, 2012 at 04:50 PM
Let's all discuss how to get the most out of our new Roku players.

I've been to Roku but they didn't do a very good job of how it works and what's possible with this small streaming device.

I think we could use some helpful links to places like:

1. Setup the roku box
a. Roku's youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/roku?feature=watch
I. Roku 2 install and setup video http://youtu.be/-UejHMGz8CE
b. Cnet's install video on Youtube. http://youtu.be/TSB5XHqmb8E

2. How to watch Shows on the Roku

3. Fav cool channels to add to Roku
a. Some funny accented guy showing new options. http://youtu.be/saRQbM6PA2o
b. Bald buy talking about OTT? what's that? Adding private channels info http://youtu.be/UGmMRj4RF-U?t=4m25s
c. A girl techie shows you how to use it and set it up. http://youtu.be/u-6v8PMCiF4

4. Cool places to find helpful tweeks to Roku

a. http://thenewtvrepublic.com/categ...orms/roku/
b. I found a cool place but have no clue how this site works or how the machine works with this site.

If anyone else wants to add links and helpful hints, go right ahead. There's no wiki in this thread so I'll try to add your reply to my thread as good links get posted.

OK I have a question. In order to get wireless I have to use my cellphone as a wifi hotspot. I only get 4 gig a month after that I have to pay $10 per gig. Will this really use a lot of data? I am worried about activating it now.

You will need a home internet connection. A few hours of streaming videos and you will be over your cap.

Pair the Roku with a Plex Media Server [plexapp.com] and Plex Channel and you'll be a happy camper. Been doing this now for about 6 months and it's a great way to stream your own media to these devices.

Sounds like the Roku can not play files directly from a network/samba mount without having to run a streaming server such as Plex. Any hack to enable this?

So far my XD I got from Dish is flaky as hell. Can't get past downloading updates. Sometimes it will connect to my network, sometimes it won't, when it finally does it fails on the update and sends me back to the wifi setup. I've restarted all my components, reset the roku a dozen times, changed my dns server in my router to 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4 to no avail. Ugh what a piece of junk!

EDIT: After hours of f'ing around i finally used my phone as a hotspot to get the Roku updated and activated. now it works perfectly fine on my home network. I don't know what was holding it up at this point.

Could be bad firmware mojo left in it from before the refurb.

Roku has a remote app for Android that work nicely.

I thought if you have Amazon Prime you get all of the AMC episodes included for free?

Finally got my roku set up and viewing some of these free channels. Still learning but the streaming seems pretty good on my G-speed router.

If you have any programming saavy Roku provides their programming language for free and help (to a degree) on how to write your own channel to create these things.

Additionally, here are some more helpful links for you all;

EDIT: I suppose I should introduce myself? laugh out loud I'm Mark and as you can see by my join date, I have been lurking here forever. We just hit my favorite topic of Roku, so I had to post finally! So, hello to you all!

For anyone else having these kind problems, we have 3 Roku's and one XD just gave me fits like this. After hours of fiddling around I finally put my Man Card in the closet and called Roku. It turned out that Roku had something set wrong on their server which wouldn't allow it to recognize my new one. The tech was really great and we ended up gabbing for a long time about things like what equipment was I running, what channels would I like to see on Roku, etc.
