Good scan to pdf software?

Does anyone know of any free and good software that can scan documents directly to PDF's? I used to use HP's "Solution Center" that came with my scanner, but I lost the installation CD and I can't find it on HP's website. I looked around online but have yet to find any good ones. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

What model scanner do you have?

CUTE PDF is the one I use.
First scan the doc into jpg or something and print to pdf using cutepdf.

Cute PDF, but I scan to printer (as in scan to print it out) and use cutepdf to make it a pdf. (saves the extra step in Superocean's method)

I have been looking for a decent freebie forever. The only one that is acceptable to me is a relatively new program called Hexonic Scan to PDF. Although it works fine, I wish the process could be done with fewer mouse clicks.

If your printer came with the Solution Center software and you want to reinstall it, you are not going to find it as a separate download on the HP site. However, if you download the full software package for your printer (the one that will be about a 300gb download, not the "driver only" package) and extract it to install it you should find the Solution Center software as one of the products in the package. Depending on the printer you have, there will be a question a page or two into the install package asking you which HP products you want to install (default is something like complete install, picking your options is something like expert install). Click on the expert install option and you'll see Solution Center as an option - you should be able to only install that and the printer driver.

This is an extra step but i use JPEGtoPDF. that program is free, but of course, you need the scanner software to scan and then use JPEGtoPDF to convert them to PDF...

I use PDFCreator [pdfforge.org] (free and open source). I don't normally scan and convert stuff but when I do, it works fine. I scan into jpg or tiff. When I'm done scanning, I drag and drop all of the the files to PDFCreator and it "prints" them to a PDF or various other formats. You can change the settings to create multipage pdf files or one PDF per source file and use the autosave feature and various other options to make it more convenient for your exact needs. Just like other PDF printers, you can right click on any file and select print to convert it or just use it as a default printer for other things you don't actually need a paper copy of but you want to save like web receipts, confirmation pages, etc.

If that doesnt help, start up a chat with HP and ask them. I think with a little bit of work you can get the software you liked that got the job done.
