The m17x R2 is one of the last systems made with a 16:10, 1200p (1920x1200) screen. Furthermore, the RGBLED screen on these systems are pretty much universally praised as being among the best screens of their time, with most owners of both the R2 and the R3, as well as the m18x, tend to be pretty disappointed in the screens in the R3 and the m18x. Food for thought if you are interested in a somewhat "modern" system with a 16:10 aspect ratio.

Just wanted to post a note --
These machines are pretty awesome (I have a 17x that's fully loaded WUXGA LED/Crossfire 5870/i7-950XM -- it's one of the unlocked mobile i7-9xx's, but can't remember which -- pretty sure it's the 950) if you're looking for a "gaming laptop" (somewhat of an oxymoron). That being said -- a few of them were returned because of the graphics cards need their firmware updated and despite feeling that I'm a pretty capable computer user (I'm a pretty sharp programmer), updating the firmware for the GPU's is a SERIOUS hassle. I ended up having Dell (Alienware)'s tech support walk me through it (since I was blue-screening every four or five hours) and it has been rock-solid ever since -- this was about a year ago. It is honestly the best laptop I've ever owned. Paid about $1400 after coupons for my fully-loaded one. I like it better than the ASUS Republic of Gamers' line of notebooks as well (since I work with one of the high-end versions of that for a demo-machine at work). I will probably look at Alienware whenever I get another "monster" laptop to replace my current in a few years. |

Beware the m14x r1
The m14x r2 released and basically solved all the problems found in my r1. Yes, you can find r1s for cheap now, but they run very high core temps, offer spotty SATA III support, no mSATA support, etc.. I would say that $650 pricetag is good for the refurb i5 model, just beware that the r1 is kind of half-baked in some regards. In my case, the jump from r1 to r2 was a gamechanger for my VJ gigs. The r2 runs 30c cooler than the r1 during my gigs!
