It was a 20% savings, I saw in this deal they had 20% off refurbs so I called to see if I could get a 5D2 at 20% off.

They didn't have any in stock, but the guy added me to his "list" and called me immediately when they came in stock. I didn't have a canon camera to trade-in so he let me pay for it and call him back later in the evening with a serial # and model #.

I picked up a decade old powershot on CL for $20 for my trade in.

can you let me know how much $$ off they gave under trade in program apart from 20%?

I actually sold all of ,my glass and 5DMII and switched to the D800E. Could not be happier. Both a great cameras along with the 5DMIII. For my needs the D800E is a perfect fit.

This is contrary to good advice and what I tell folks. Get the body you already have invested glass in.

1,759.2 * 0.2 = 351.84, so it looks like just the 20%.

You can call the loyalty program and ask for 'Sean', that's who helped me, maybe he will take care of you as well?

edit: He did offer me 20% off a lens, but I already have a 24-105 L and a few EF lenses so I didn't get any of those.

Any Canon camera will work for trade-in, even the old 35mm ones.

Exactly. I thoroughly enjoy Canon as they have fantastic cameras and glass. I also really like my wife's little NEX-5N, I was impressed.

FYI, new Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 with VC is awesome.

I wouldn't recommend the Rebel or D3100 to anyone. A 60D is not much more expensive, and far superior to the Rebel, and if that price jump is too great, a used 50D will be comparable in price to a Rebel, and still superior. I don't know what the Nikon equivalents are, only assuming the same holds true.

I understand not wanting to tie up money in a hobby you might not really be serious about, but if you can afford a higher end camera at the onset you'll likely save yourself some money. I have many friends who outgrew the Rebel within a month or two, they still liked it, but they quickly reached the point where they wanted more and start looking at an upgrade. Also, the higher end models tend to hold resale value better than the bottom rung.
