Good prize and I need one badly. However, I still have the DOA 2 Tb Expansion. It goes to sleep mode all the time. I took the drive off the case and tried to use it as an internal and got the same problem. It seems to be a firmware issue but Seagate will not issue a new one. I bought the drive when it was on sales before the flood and did not need it at the time. By the time I found out it does not work, I cannot return it. So it is now a door stopper.

For the most part external drives have never been good. They get way too hot in the enclosure unless it has forced air.

3TB drives in general also tend to be designed as storage drives, not performance drives, so prepare for chug-chug-chug.

Unless you're on a mini-ITX build or something and only have one drive bay, I'd recommend using a SSD as your boot drive to install windows and your favorite frequently used applications on, and then get a better quality 3TB drive for storage where you put your music, videos, etc on.

I'm thinking of doing a mid-ATX, or full size. Not sure yet. I was actually looking into the SSD option for the main OS. The SSD's are so expensive though. I'm not doing the build for a few months, just keeping an eye open for great deals. Wink

( and I have no other reason for building one, other then I want to for cool factor. LOL..it's going to be sick when I'm done though..hahaha)

SSD's have notoriously high failure rates for something with absolutely no moving parts. Writable Optical media can fail in as little as 4 years just sitting on a shelf.
Tape is actually really solid, but nobody (at a consumer level) uses tape anymore.

Beyond tape, either offline HDDs or archival grade optical (TY) media are probably your best bets.
