The trope of the “cat lady,” essentially a woman who has failed in all attempts to acquire human companions (which has resulted in ever-increasing numbers of feline friends to fill the void of her lonely singledom) is one associated with loneliness and depression, but a new study has actually linked the idea of a “crazy cat lady” to increased risked of suicide.

But is that really why they "collect" cats? Because they're lonely? Maybe it's like hoarding and is more related to OCD.

I heard something on the radio (keep in mind it's some awful morning talk show where they usually BS all morning) that there's something about one cat that makes you want another cat. And the more cats you have, the more of them you want. I can't remember what they said. Something like a pheromone...

And then something about that "pheromone" or whatever is what makes you crazy - hence the "Crazy Cat Lady"

If you do watch the Hoarding show, there is always something traumatic in their lives that triggers something that causes them to collect things and then keep them forever because they feel if they throw them away, they are throwing away part of themselves or part of the person that died/left them.

It is all the same...people with a hole in their heart try to fill with with objects, drugs or cats...and it never works out well.

Their was one show of a crazy dog boy who collected all of his dogs hair and wouldn't throw it away (just left it in piles, everywhere) because he felt if he threw it away he was killing his dog. His trauma was an alcoholic father.

OCD reactions are just unexplained ticks / quirks.
