USB 2.0/3.0 enclosure for 3TB Hitachi 3.5in HD
does anyone know of a decently priced USB 2.0/3.0 enclosure that would support 3TB internal HD? If the brand of the HD makes a difference, I bought a 3TB Hitachi HD (and now regretting getting it) because my desktop (dell xps 8100) doesn't support it natively.Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

I am pretty sure any modern OS with dell xps 8100 would recognize 3TB hard drive. You just can't boot from it without the UEFI extension in the bios. There shouldn't be a problem using the 3TB drive as storage drive after it's formatted in GPT format.

Man I wish that was the case. But unfortunately it is not.
You must format the HD in another computer that recognizes 3TB in BIOS. XPS 8100 BIOS only sees 746GB. I've been at this for a couple of weeks now.. But if you have a way, please do share!

Yeah.. i have the latest BIOS. Also, if you looked at the 2nd to the last post on that site, the problem seems to be with DELL..

I am not even sure if they would support it if I do the format on another computer, but I've been told it MIGHT work if the HD is in a 3TB acceptable enclosure since apparently the USB interface has no such limitation. appreciate your help in this, but I guess I want to move beyond the "how I can fix it" to the "I know DELL isn't going to fix it, but what else can I do" phase. Sorry..

I would rather a SATA PCIE card than an external. It will be way faster that way.

well, i don't think i have room in the computer. that's why i'm looking for an external enclosure.
