The main purpose is to be able to transport the laptop easily in my messenger bag, whether I'm walking or on a bike. Thus, the smaller, the better. Last edited by kakomu; 07-11-2012 at 05:42 AM.. |

Steve Gibson on password policies [grc.com]: I mean, I don't get this change it every eight weeks. ... It's not as if passwords are traveling by camel after they've been stolen, going to the bad guys, and so there's, like, some weird eight-week window, like, oh, we're going to change your password so that the stale password no longer works. ... And all this does is make IT people despised because users, who are not dumb, they think, why am I - why do I have to do this? What problem is this solving?

As to the suggestions I'm seeing in the thread, the Asus Zenbook seems the most promising and the Dell Ultrabook is sorta promising (but still a bit large for my use, IMO). The rest are either less powerful (Samsung Series 9) or bulky (HP 2170p). |

I did a comparison of dimensions of all the Netbooks I was looking at compared to my own notebook. What I found interesting is that the rectangular volume (important for me as I'll be using a rectangular foam case for whichever laptop I get) of the Macbook Air (60.66 in^3) is only slightly less voluminous than the XPS 13 (71.3 in^3) which is slightly less voluminous than the Macbook air 13.3 (77.81 in^3). BTW, how large is the Macbook Air's power brick? A bulky power brick can kill the portability of any laptop. Moreover, how do you transport your Macbook Air? Any specific case? However, it seems to me that the processors are clocked faster in the X230 than in the Macbook Air (and similar ultrabooks). Namely, all of the Ivy Bridge processors in the X230 are clocked to go faster than 3 ghz (except the i3), whereas only the fastest MBA processor can get past 3ghz. I'm not sure how well the u series and m series ivy bridge processors correspond to each other, but I get the impression that the larger chassis with greater air flow allows the processors to run faster. However, one of the best features of the X230 over the MBA is the IPS display. I'm still on the fence as to what I'll get, but the X230's IPS display and user replaceable hardware make me lean toward the X230. All things considered, the X230 would be a bit more expensive than a similar specced MBA 11.6", but less money then a similarly specced MBA 13.3". It would have smaller width/depth than a MBA 13.3, but would be about a 3/10" thicker than either MBA. Last edited by kakomu; 07-12-2012 at 09:52 AM.. |
