Deal Details

This thing is basically fully loaded. It packs a 14" 1600x900 300nit matte screen, Sandy Bridge i5 2450M (2.5GHz up to 3.1 Turbo), 8GB RAM (stated as max, but likely could handle 16GB), AMD Radeon HD6490M 1GB GDDR5 discrete graphics, 2x USB ports (1x 2.0, 1x 3.0), 4-1 SD card reader, Gigabit ethernet, HDMI out, DVD burner (if you're still into that type of thing), Intel WiDi, Bluetooth 3.0, HD webcam, great backlit keyboard, and is stated for up 7.8 hours of run time (reviews say 5-6 hours real-world).

I had been looking for a new notebook for awhile. Ultrabooks just weren't enough for me, and I wanted something a little thinner/lighter than a full blown workstation or gaming laptop. I finally found this Samsung Series 7 at Walmart (originally I ordered the S06US version for $850+tax through the MS Store + the free Xbox). The only specification differences I saw between this S03 and the S06 is that the S03 has a 750GB non-express cache HDD (S06 has 1TB with express cache). I figure I can easily switch out the 750GB HDD for an SSD, and still be well below the price of the S06.

I haven't found the S03 anywhere else, so I am comparing its price with the S06 (which is a bit superior as noted above). Still, the S06 is $850 at the cheapest anywhere (Newegg, MS Store), and is $950 on Amazon. So this is roughly $200 cheaper (after tax) than the cheapest S06, with the only tradeoff being the HDD (which you could easily upgrade to a full size SSD with the $200 in savings, and be better off than the S06 anyway).

This is a really nice "in-between" notebook for those not needing heavy graphics or ultra-portability. It's less than an inch thick, and weight is stated to be 4.5lb.

The only gripe I have seen from many reviews is the overall screen quality - it uses a TN panel. For me, I don't need professional level graphics or color reproduction - and if I need to share my screen I'll usually be in a situation where I can just push it to the TV via the WiDi - so viewing angles aren't a big concern for me. Most important for me was is being able to view on the porch, and in partial sunlight - so the 340nit matte screen should take care of that. Some also had minor gripes about the touchpad, but form what I've read, that can be solved with software/driver tweaks.

I put YMMV b/c it's showing out of stock online, but my local Walmart had them in stock for pickup. So you'll just have to check around.

Seems like a very solid deal for a notebook with these specs. I may have to bite. My core 2 duo just isn't cutting it for video encoding, I need more oomph.

Damn, OOS as I was looking at it.
But supposedly there is one available at my store. I will have to check it out.

not really worth it imo, that GPU is bad, and you are paying ~$150 or so for it

So, just out of curiosity, where is a laptop with similar specs (most importantly CPU, RAM, Display [res/brightness/matte], good WiFi card, USB 3.0, very good keyboard, and overall quality) for $450-$500? I would happily accept that tradeoff, as I don't even care about the discrete graphics.

Edit: Also important would be SD card reader, overall size of <1" thick, weight less than 5lb, and real world battery life of 5+ hours.

I found one in a local store but they were emphatic on the phone that the store price is not the web price. Were you able to purchase this for $600 locally?

this is actually a pretty good deal - however the 1st gen series 7 chronos laptops have problems with GPU switching between the hd3000 and the amd cards (such as this 6490M). The new versions with IVB and kepler GPUs (Nvidia GTX 630/640/650M cards) are much better at switching between the dedicated and integrated GPU's because of Nvidia's "Optimus" technology.

Yeah, I was actually able buy it online, and pick it up in store locally (Central FL).

It's a great deal! None of the local Walmarts in DFW have them. I was told it's online only.

Please let me know how you did this. If I follow your link it does not allow the item to be purchased on line. Was the item in stock on line when you purchased originally? If you can't purchase on line with in store pick up then this deal is dead.

Yeah, it may be dead, I don't know. When I purchased it, I was browsing my local store (where you choose Store Finder at the top). It said it was in stock, and gave me the option to buy it online and pick up in store. But like you're saying, now when I go to the page, it says OOS online, and says "In Stores Price May Vary." So I guess it's a lot more YMMV than I originally thought. Sorry.

Any idea if Samsung plans to release a refreshed 14" with IVB and Nvidia? I've seen the 15" and 17", but I've heard no word of a 14" version coming.
