G-Technology G-DRIVE 2TB external hard drive - $189.99

That's so expensive and outdated.

Retail alone on WD goes for $120, Seagate for $109; and come with USB 3.0 and some including Thunderbolt.

Does this drive do some magic to justify the high price? It seems a bit expensive and outdated to me.

Pros: 7200 RPM, 3 year warranty, the word "Professional" is used numerous times in the description
Cons: No USB 3.0, No Thunderbolt, relatively high price for 2 TB external drive

For comparison, you can get the Hitachi Touro Desk Pro (HTOLDNB20001BBB [amazon.com]) 2 TB, 7200 RPM, USB 3.0 from Amazon (actually J&R Music) for $130. There are many other choices out there if you look.

This is the brand the apple-care rep told me to buy to store my 8000+ pictures on and free up some space on my older mac. I'd never heard of it but it must be very mac friendly? Haven't bought one yet though..

It is not very difficult to change a Western Digital or Seagate hard drive to the Apple partition called HFS+

You would need to:

Open Disk Utility
Locate the New Drive that will be labeled as a NTFS Partition
Delete ( - ) the NTFS Partition
Create ( + ) the HFS+ Partition
Format the drive as "Extended Journaled"
Apply.

OR

You could set up Time Machine and it will automatically configure it for you.

I think the Seagate is a better purchase than the Hitachi & Western Digital.

I wonder if these drives will now be made by Western Digital or Toshiba? WD bought acquired Hitachi and now sells Hitachi under the HGST brand name (G-Drive is a part of that line) but it had to sell part of Hitachi [wdc.com] to Toshiba...

I think the high cost is because these drives look like Macs and are built in a sturdier more ventilated case.... As 3.0 versions are coming soon, these should drop more in price/ go on clearance.
