Is that e-cert valid only on one ticket or all tickets under a reservation (like up to 4 or something)? If all under a res do you ever travel with others where you could take advantage of it?

Hell, I'd think if it's transferable you could get some serious coin from a 3rd party buyer or something. Imagine 20% off a business class seat to Asia/Europe (especially if it's good on more than one ticket)!

Here are the Terms and Conditions, looks like it's limited to just 1 ticket. If not that would have been a nice way to use it.

1. Permitted Travel Area: You may travel to and from any city served by United or United Express.

2. Discount Amount: Percent-off a qualifying itinerary purchased at united.com. The discount applies only to the base fare, and not to any taxes, fees or surcharges, including, but not limited to Passenger Facility Charges (PFCs), departure and arrival taxes and carrier-imposed surcharges. The total price shown on united.com for qualifying itineraries will comprise the discounted base fare and all applicable taxes, fees and surcharges.

3. Eligibility Restrictions: This discount may only be applied to the purchase of one new ticket and may not be applied to previously issued tickets.

4. Valid Carrier: United, or United Express(R) operated flights; It is not valid on flights operated by other airlines, such as United-Marketed code share and Star Alliance Flights.

5. Ticketing Dates: Valid for 1 year from July 11, 2012

6. Travel Dates: Valid for 1 year from July 11, 2012

7. Blackout Dates: None

8. Advance Purchase: Per rule of fare purchased

9. Min/Max Stay Requirements: Per rule of fare purchased

10. Valid Routing: To take advantage of this discount you must travel from any city served by United or United Express to any city served by United or United Express worldwide during the above travel period. You must travel only United-marketed and operated flights for your entire itinerary, and you must follow a permitted routing. Circle trips and trips with multi-city itineraries, do not qualify for this offer.

11. Stopovers: Not permitted

12. Qualifying Fares: This discount may be used on following published fares: United First(R) (F,A) class, United Business(R) (J,C,D,Z) class and United Economy(R) (Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W, S, T, L, K) class fares.

13. Restricted Fares: This discount may not be used on the following fares: companion, travel industry, G class, contract, bulk, convention, tour conductor, children, family plan, government, group, military, senior citizen, student, youth, infant, tour basing, Round the World, Circle the Pacific, Visit USA, or any non-published fares. The discount certificate is not valid and does not apply if the discount amount equals or exceeds the base fare amount, therefore, the discount certificate will never be greater than the base fare and a residual value will not apply.

14. Additional Taxes and Fees: All taxes, fees and carrier imposed surcharges are additional

15. Fare Rules: All rules of the fare purchased apply. Reservations and ticket purchases on united.com must be completed simultaneously. The published fare you qualify for depends on what class of service is available on the days you travel. Some markets may have lower fares available without the discount.

19. Ticketing: You may redeem this electronic certificate on united.com or a worldwide united.com site. Discount only applies when ticket is purchased on united.com using the certificate number and a credit card that has a valid local billing address. Electronic certificates cannot be redeemed by calling United Airlines or your travel professional.

20. Residual Value of Certificate/Discount: The discount certificate is not valid and does not apply if the discount amount equals or exceeds the base fare amount, therefore, the discount certificate will never be greater than the base fare and a residual value will not apply.

21. Mileage Plus(R) Accrual: Permitted

22. Upgrades: To determine if the fare purchased with this discount allows the use of an upgrade certificate refer to the terms and conditions and booking class restrictions associated with the upgrade type you are using.

23. Changes: Rules of the fare determine if changes are permitted. If changes are allowed, there may be service charges and fees associated with a change. You will receive the value of the discounted ticket, less any of the aforementioned service charges and/or fees towards the purchase of a new ticket.

24. Refunds: This discount is non-refundable, once used, the discount will not be reissued for future use. Any refund due is based on the amount actually paid minus any service fees. The discount may not be applied toward the purchase of another ticket when exchanging or refunding your original ticket, except when the original ticket qualifies for a reduced fare (guaranteed airfare rule applies). Realistically they'll never know how it was transferred. I don't personally know about the black market for these things but it's an option. If it were me and I wasn't having any big ticket purchases coming up I'd probably just take the $150 credit. Only thing is make sure it's a $150 off any flight category. If it's $150 off a full fare for example that's BS however $150 off their cheapest ticket price isn't a bad deal.

Heck, either way I'd take any of these for a delay

LOL. Read what you quoted again and ask yourself if it would be valid for a business class seat.

May I ask if this is normal for United to offer this sign of caring or are you one of those million mile members :-)?
The reason I ask is on my last trip (last month) with United, my "to" leg plane was canceled due to mechcanical problem (this after everyone boarded) and it took like a act of god to get another flight that same day. We are talking plus 7 hours extra to get my destination due to all the changes. I'm talking about from a major hub (SFO).
My return flight was not any better, due to weather in Denver they held us at the gate for 1.5 hours. I ended calling United on phone while on plane and got myself booked through Chicago so I could make a connecting flight, but when boarding time came they gave my seat away! I ended up getting voucher for motel as there were no more flights out with connecting flight that night, but what a waste of time. One of my worse United travel expericences. O yeah, I'm a Mileage Plus member for xx yrs :-(.

My flight was from Houston (super-hub) to Boston. I've had silver status for 5 years. The flight attendant mentioned the website (united.com/appreciation) toward the end of the flight, so I think everyone onboard was offered something [I have no idea if it varied by status].

I did a little searching on other forums and it does seem like the package they offer varies by status (which makes sense to me).

My experience was like this: 15 minutes before we were to board, gate attendant told us that there was a mechanical problem with the plane and that they were waiting for an inbound part that was to be landing within the next half hour, then that the repair would take approximately 2 hours. At that point they offered $10 meal vouchers (some customers said they would request hotel as the new arrival time was early AM, don't know if that worked out for them). The departure time was gradually pushed back until it was a total of 5 hours after the original time. The landing time was now early morning, instead of late night. I had meandered away from the gate for a while and came back to see a cart of drinks and packaged snack food in our gate area. I had talked with customer service to get a spot on the first flight the next day, in case the delayed flight was cancelled, but I never had to use it.

I was most disappointed because the problem was known well before passengers were alerted (I probably could have made alternative plans to get to Boston at a more reasonable time if I'd known). And that we were at a major hub and they couldn't identify an alternative aircraft that could be used for the flight.
