Does my android phone have a virus? Samsung galaxy s2

Today my phone became unresponsive after trying to make a call in a roaming area (Sprint) and I shut it down by holding down the power button. I'm not sure if that's how it shut down or if it forcefully shut down on it's own.

However, when it started back up, it started back like in a "rooting" type of mode. Then it said something along the lines of "Update installed" or "packet(s) installed". I never hacked my android, never downloaded anything fishy and I don't have the option selected that would let third party apps to be installed...

Do I have a virus?

Sounds like an OTA update...

What did the screen look like? Like this?


You may have inadvertently activated download mode with a button combo, but I doubt it. You would have had to hold the power button, volume down, and home button at the same time (which if you've ever tried to do is quite difficult to do "accidentally").

Some phones you can put it in to recovery or download mode by doing VOL DOWN + POWER or VOL DOWN + UP + POWER. So I can see the OP not knowingly pressing VOL + POWER or if he has a case like the otterbox it pressing the vol key as mine sometimes does.

EDIT: google says your right dzap for the s2 both download and recovery mode involve pressing the home key.

It sounds like to me you started up in Clockwork Recovery.

You can just click reboot now and you should get back to the OS. I take it you have modified the phone?

On second thought the user is probably not in CWM and instead in an update as other posters suggest. It does sound like he has thought about modifying his phone though. Its great fun I suggest it.

I'd say my post was more helpful to clarify what was already stated to you then your last post is to anyone...

Usually it will only notify that there is an update and not process it. Unless the OP inadvertently hit the update button.

It sounds like an OTA died on your phone. Normally, it boots into this recovery mode to install. It may have messed itself up, or it didn't react well to you resetting it.

Did it come back normally after another power cycle? Have you pulled the battery?

No, it didn't look nearly as nice as all of those other images... those were too neat. The screen was black with all of those little writings on it, but it wasn't as neat as those in the pics that you guys provided. I'm hoping that Somesort's answer was the correct one.

Does anyone know if there are known viruses that do this?

Also, my phone def isn't ICS as yet... but going to check for updates right now.

Any other info from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Android malware is not that advanced yet, Most either steal your contact information, or send spam emails and texts. It sounds like your stock so I really don't think any of the system files have been modified, to load a recovery, or change your boot animation etc.

You could always do a factory restore if you are worried. This will erase everything. You could also take it to the carrier. It's very hard to determine more without a better description or a picture.
