Deal Details

It's here! Are your wallets ready for the abuse? Here's hoping there are great deals to be had here. I'll update this thread with sales and deals.

Click here for sale's frontpage: http://store.steampowered.com/

Quick primer for the newcomers:

  • Daily Deals: Each day, new daily deals appear at 10AM PST and expires the next day at 10PM
  • Flash Deals: At any given time, there will be 4 deals that won't last long (several hours). When one expires, another replaces it.
  • Community Vote Deals: You get to vote on what the next deal is. Every 8 hours.
  • Deals spanning the entire event: Various games and bundles are on sale for the entire sale, however play it smart and only buy a game if it's a daily deal (when the price is lower). Resort to buying what doesn't go on sale as a daily deal at the end of the sale.
Steam Sale Commandments:
  • Thou shalt not purchase any individual title unless it is a daily/flash/community deal. Wait until the end to buy otherwise.
  • Thou shalt not hesitate to jump on too-good-to-be-true deals as there have been price mistakes in the past sales. Price mistakes are honored.
  • Thou shalt not hesitate to dip into the kids' college funds to buy these games
  • Thou shalt live off of ramen until the end of the sale
====Current Deals====
Remember, never buy a game unless it's a daily/flash/community deal. If it never shows up as a daily/flash/community deal, go ahead and buy it on sale at the last minute.

7/22 Daily Deals (ends 10PM 7/23):
Flash Deals:
When a flash deal ends, another begins...
Community Vote Deal:
A new poll and deal every 8 hours...

====Event-wide Deals (July 12th - 23rd)====
I cannot express this enough: only buy games if it is a daily/flash/community deal. Resort to purchasing on-sale games at the last minute if it never appears as a daily deal.

Individual Titles:
A subjective listing of some cheap/good games that I believe are already at their lowest. Might as well buy these whenever. Please do your own research first before buying!

Publisher Bundles:

The flip side of this is that games on physical media with non-phone home DRM will remain usable so long as you maintain your copy. Steam is around now, but who knows in another five years. Or ten years. Or more. We've already seen online distributors fold or merge, taking the ability to play catalogs of games with them. It will be no different. The question is when this will occur.
Valid point, but EA is more likely to stop Origin than Valve would with Steam, mainly since Gabe Newell is revered like a god on Reddit.

With that said, I try to always purchase on Amazon, which lets you download plus lets you activate in Steam.

Picked up painkiller pack. That is a sweet deal on an excellent old school FPS.

The way technology is going these days, physical media should be worried about outlasting Steam. IMO there will always be a company willing to take over all the user accounts Steam has.

What happens if Amazon goes bankrupt? What happens if I drop dead while typing this "What happens if.." reply....? Will I ever catch up with my game backlog? Does the refridgerator light stay on when I close the door? Big Grin

Just kidding, but seriously....

Steam has grown into the "Too big to fail" category. Sure Steam could fold and go bankrupt for some reason (usually bad management) but with its customer base your can bet that it would be scooped up by Amazon, Apple, Microsoft or some investment group.

If Steam goes away it will be because civilization has collapsed. And if it hasn't, Steam going away will cause it. So no worries. Wink

Maybe Steam will collapse civilization when everyone simultaneously decides they're going to tackle their game backlogs. laugh out loud

It's not that simple. Distribution on Steam requires an agreement between Valve and the IP holder. Depending on the terms of their agreement, it may be necessary to renegotiate distribution rights in the event of a Valve buyout and transfer of services. If the IP holder has changed their minds about distribution, or simply doesn't exist in anymore, Valve 2.0 may lose their ability to distribute it.

This has already happened plenty of times, but the most recent example that I can think of is with Direct2Drive. When they were bought out by GameFly, large sections of their catalog were eliminated, and users could no longer access them. This was due to licensing troubles. Some of it was tied up in holding companies that had no interest in doing anything but holding onto their IP. Some of had vague ownership that could not be resolved. And some IP owners simply changed their mind about distribution and used the D2D merger to pull out.

When Valve eventually folds, merges, or is picked apart by outside investors, this will undoubtedly happen. The question is whether anyone will still care about these games when it occurs. Given that Atari games are still being actively bought and sold, my guess is that it's going to be quite a problem.

My gut says no. I only need Harley Quinn's Revenge, so I'm going to go ahead and buy that now, seeing as even if it goes to 75% off, I'll only be out 90 cents. But if you're thinking of the base game, I'd probably wait for the Daily Deal, as it's certainly not going to go on sale with a lesser discount than 66%.

The Nightwing and Robin DLC's add completely unique characters. They also come with 2 new challenge maps each. And they are very different from Batman in playstyle. For a few extra bucks IMO they are worth it
Are they playable in the real game, though? I got the impression from the description that the new characters are only playable in the challenge rooms, which seriously limits their appeal to someone like me.

Community Vote, anyone care about any of these games? I haven't voted yet and don't want any of these.

I know that on physical items Amazon has a great return policy and their costumer service is great. Their website lists that Digital Orders are not returnable. Though I don't know how strickly they enforce that policy.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/cus...eId=901904

Has anyone tried returning a digital purchase to them?
Once time I bought a game from amazon, and I was able to cancel it by clicking a cancel button "ordered by mistake." I don't think steam has that option. You cannot return or cancel your order from steamNono2

I believe they're only playable in all challenge maps, so yeah it does limit the appeal to some people. For like $2.66 each, for me they're worth it (I'm also a huge batman fan so I'm kinda biased lol)

Trine 2 is back to 75% off on the Daily Deal! I know there were a few who missed the flash deal on it.
