Deal Details

It's here! Are your wallets ready for the abuse? Here's hoping there are great deals to be had here. I'll update this thread with sales and deals.

Click here for sale's frontpage: http://store.steampowered.com/

Quick primer for the newcomers:

  • Daily Deals: Each day, new daily deals appear at 10AM PST and expires the next day at 10PM
  • Flash Deals: At any given time, there will be 4 deals that won't last long (several hours). When one expires, another replaces it.
  • Community Vote Deals: You get to vote on what the next deal is. Every 8 hours.
  • Deals spanning the entire event: Various games and bundles are on sale for the entire sale, however play it smart and only buy a game if it's a daily deal (when the price is lower). Resort to buying what doesn't go on sale as a daily deal at the end of the sale.
Steam Sale Commandments:
  • Thou shalt not purchase any individual title unless it is a daily/flash/community deal. Wait until the end to buy otherwise.
  • Thou shalt not hesitate to jump on too-good-to-be-true deals as there have been price mistakes in the past sales. Price mistakes are honored.
  • Thou shalt not hesitate to dip into the kids' college funds to buy these games
  • Thou shalt live off of ramen until the end of the sale
====Current Deals====
Remember, never buy a game unless it's a daily/flash/community deal. If it never shows up as a daily/flash/community deal, go ahead and buy it on sale at the last minute.

7/22 Daily Deals (ends 10PM 7/23):
Flash Deals:
When a flash deal ends, another begins...
Community Vote Deal:
A new poll and deal every 8 hours...

====Event-wide Deals (July 12th - 23rd)====
I cannot express this enough: only buy games if it is a daily/flash/community deal. Resort to purchasing on-sale games at the last minute if it never appears as a daily deal.

Individual Titles:
A subjective listing of some cheap/good games that I believe are already at their lowest. Might as well buy these whenever. Please do your own research first before buying!

Publisher Bundles:

And if I'm not mistaken, Saints Row 3 is the first game to appear in a Daily Deal, while also having won an earlier Community Vote. And the discount is the same, i.e. base game is $12.49. So, take that for waht it's worth.

Interested in The Walking Dead game. $14.99 (40% off) is probably the lowest it will go?

I'm hoping to get Mass Effect 1 & 2 together for around $7.50 or less. I don't think they have been that cheap yet so hopefully they show up sometime during this sale.

Trine 2 is back to 75% off on the Daily Deal! I know there were a few who missed the flash deal on it.
Thanks a bunch. I was bummed that I missed this the first time.

Ohhh, me too! Well, I really only need ME2 for $5, which was the price it has always gotten to as a daily in past Steam sales. I kept passing on it because I wanted a set with all the DLC, but I can't wait anymore!EEK!

Same here. I'll probably just get it now. It was $18.49 before it became a daily deal today, and it's new enough that I doubt they do 75% with it.

It's not that simple. Distribution on Steam requires an agreement between Valve and the IP holder. Depending on the terms of their agreement, it may be necessary to renegotiate distribution rights in the event of a Valve buyout and transfer of services. If the IP holder has changed their minds about distribution, or simply doesn't exist in anymore, Valve 2.0 may lose their ability to distribute it.

This has already happened plenty of times, but the most recent example that I can think of is with Direct2Drive. When they were bought out by GameFly, large sections of their catalog were eliminated, and users could no longer access them. This was due to licensing troubles. Some of it was tied up in holding companies that had no interest in doing anything but holding onto their IP. Some of had vague ownership that could not be resolved. And some IP owners simply changed their mind about distribution and used the D2D merger to pull out.

When Valve eventually folds, merges, or is picked apart by outside investors, this will undoubtedly happen. The question is whether anyone will still care about these games when it occurs. Given that Atari games are still being actively bought and sold, my guess is that it's going to be quite a problem.
I will bite.

Soooo... the solution is to buy all games in a retail box with CDs and the product keys ( I always liked having to keep the CD in the drive to be able to play). Where will I get the patches and updates when EA, etc go bankrupt? What happens if my dog eats the CD or the kids use it as a Frisbee?

Are Amazon downloads subject to the same vulnerabilitues during a corporate shakeup/bankruptcy/contact renewals? GFWL? Green Man Gaming? XBOX Live? Playstation? Etc, etc, etc....

I am not arguing your points but simply pointing out that every option has a vulnerability. It is uncessary and useless to post on a Steam Sale thread, once again, that Steam could go bankrupt. So could GM and Chrysler and people would lose thier warranty..... Hey! They almost did!

Very similar to people who like to post how they will not buy game XXXXX because it has DRM and they have principles. That is nice, but who cares?

If anyone wants a game from ubisoft, good luck. There authentication server is down since sometime yesterday and the Uplay service is notorious for being horrible when 'working' normally anyway. Too bad i didn't find this out till after i bought AC:R. Got to play for a while but when i tried to start it up again it says i have to login online first to use the offline feature (even though i was online when i played earlier). Screw you ubisoft. Should have gone with the year-round summer sale strategy......

At no point did I really argue against Steam. My response was simply directed toward those who think Steam will continue, with full game access, even if they go under or get bought out. A mountain of prior evidence shows that this will not be a case.

The point being made is that while every system of delivery has weaknesses, physical media with non-phone home DRM places the onus entirely on the customer. With Steam and Steam-like services, you place your faith in the distributor to stay afloat. Whether you opt to buy one way or other depends on your personal values and, of course, if alternatives are even available for what you want to purchase. But either way, believing Steam is "too big to fail" and that you'll always have access to your purchases is complete and utter lunacy.
