Deal Details

It's here! Are your wallets ready for the abuse? Here's hoping there are great deals to be had here. I'll update this thread with sales and deals.

Click here for sale's frontpage: http://store.steampowered.com/

Quick primer for the newcomers:

  • Daily Deals: Each day, new daily deals appear at 10AM PST and expires the next day at 10PM
  • Flash Deals: At any given time, there will be 4 deals that won't last long (several hours). When one expires, another replaces it.
  • Community Vote Deals: You get to vote on what the next deal is. Every 8 hours.
  • Deals spanning the entire event: Various games and bundles are on sale for the entire sale, however play it smart and only buy a game if it's a daily deal (when the price is lower). Resort to buying what doesn't go on sale as a daily deal at the end of the sale.
Steam Sale Commandments:
  • Thou shalt not purchase any individual title unless it is a daily/flash/community deal. Wait until the end to buy otherwise.
  • Thou shalt not hesitate to jump on too-good-to-be-true deals as there have been price mistakes in the past sales. Price mistakes are honored.
  • Thou shalt not hesitate to dip into the kids' college funds to buy these games
  • Thou shalt live off of ramen until the end of the sale
====Current Deals====
Remember, never buy a game unless it's a daily/flash/community deal. If it never shows up as a daily/flash/community deal, go ahead and buy it on sale at the last minute.

7/22 Daily Deals (ends 10PM 7/23):
Flash Deals:
When a flash deal ends, another begins...
Community Vote Deal:
A new poll and deal every 8 hours...

====Event-wide Deals (July 12th - 23rd)====
I cannot express this enough: only buy games if it is a daily/flash/community deal. Resort to purchasing on-sale games at the last minute if it never appears as a daily deal.

Individual Titles:
A subjective listing of some cheap/good games that I believe are already at their lowest. Might as well buy these whenever. Please do your own research first before buying!

Publisher Bundles:

I just noticed that Garry's Mod is $4.99 which is 50% off. The sale is through July 23, does anyone know if it's ever been cheaper? I'm unsure if this is it's own sale or part of the overall summer one.

I have the retail box version of Sins of a Solar Empire and it's registered on Impulse (and is my only non-Steam "digital download"). Is SoSE: Trinity the base game with two expansions? Might be worth 5 bucks to get it on Steam if so.

Nope, pretty sure it's been that price through the whole sale. It has been as low as $2.49, most recently in the holiday 2011 timeframe.

Dragon Age: Origin is finally on sale! I know a lot of people wanted it
Oh tempted! I didn't much care for Dragon Age 2. I've heard DA1 is more a true RPG though. What about the expansions, are they worth it too?

So I'm pretty sure I need to replace all 3 parts. I just want to know the best combination (brands and model numbers) for under $250 (if such a combo exists) that will let me play all of the current games so I don't have to keep passing on these great Steam deals.

Sadly, now's not the best time for $50 to $100 graphics card deals. But to play many of the current games at near or at their higher settings, your best bet is probably something in the range of a Radeon HD 5750, 5770, 6750, 6770, 7750 or 7770 card. Right not nvidia recent card models are not really not competitive in this sub-$100 range price/performance wise. But definitely look for a card that uses DDR5 memory, not DDR3.
Yep, I'd recommend getting the HD 7750 or 7770 if possible though, as they draw significantly less power than their 6000 series counterparts. The 7750 sells for around $110 at Newegg, while the 7770 is around $130, or perhaps a bit less with rebates or special promotions. Combined with a mobo/cpu combo deal for around $150, you should be able to roughly maintain your ~$250 upgrade goal.

STALKER is priced right. Dragon Age made a few people happy. Not a stellar day but there were a few pearls in the oysters for some people.

Voted for Longest Journey, could be an interesting title for $2.50. Other 2 looked kinda weaksauce.

DAO w/o a doubt. Fable 2 was fun, but short. Fable 3, as I understand it is downright tedious because you have to do upkeep on your property and you need to go to each one whenever you do it so you can't just manage them all. Big hassle, among other things. The next Fable is an on-rails kinect pseudo-shooter where you you're driving on a wagon. I'm pretty sure they've lost it there. Granted, DA2 was considerably worse than DAO, and most are thankful they didn't ruin things by making a DA3 but DAO is several tiers above Fable 3 on the fun scale. They are different types of games though. Generally DAO is a tactics game, whereas Fable is an action/arcade style game.
