It's here! Are your wallets ready for the abuse? Here's hoping there are great deals to be had here. I'll update this thread with sales and deals.

Click here for sale's frontpage: http://store.steampowered.com/

Quick primer for the newcomers:

  • Daily Deals: Each day, new daily deals appear at 10AM PST and expires the next day at 10PM
  • Flash Deals: At any given time, there will be 4 deals that won't last long (several hours). When one expires, another replaces it.
  • Community Vote Deals: You get to vote on what the next deal is. Every 8 hours.
  • Deals spanning the entire event: Various games and bundles are on sale for the entire sale, however play it smart and only buy a game if it's a daily deal (when the price is lower). Resort to buying what doesn't go on sale as a daily deal at the end of the sale.
Steam Sale Commandments:
  • Thou shalt not purchase any individual title unless it is a daily/flash/community deal. Wait until the end to buy otherwise.
  • Thou shalt not hesitate to jump on too-good-to-be-true deals as there have been price mistakes in the past sales. Price mistakes are honored.
  • Thou shalt not hesitate to dip into the kids' college funds to buy these games
  • Thou shalt live off of ramen until the end of the sale
====Current Deals====
Remember, never buy a game unless it's a daily/flash/community deal. If it never shows up as a daily/flash/community deal, go ahead and buy it on sale at the last minute.

7/22 Daily Deals (ends 10PM 7/23):
Flash Deals:
When a flash deal ends, another begins...
Community Vote Deal:
A new poll and deal every 8 hours...

====Event-wide Deals (July 12th - 23rd)====
I cannot express this enough: only buy games if it is a daily/flash/community deal. Resort to purchasing on-sale games at the last minute if it never appears as a daily deal.

Individual Titles:
A subjective listing of some cheap/good games that I believe are already at their lowest. Might as well buy these whenever. Please do your own research first before buying!

Publisher Bundles:

I'll reccomend the Mount & Blade, it's a very fun game, I got the Warband one, tons of gameplay and a unique fighting system.

WOOT WOOT...trine 2 is back up. Should I get collectors edition or just regular edition. I have trine 1 on a secondary steam account that has the other half of my games. What else is any good to snag from the current sale. I had a member message me for my borderlands GOTY copy I have had for a while now due to buying it in the last sale as a 4 pack. I might have 1 more GOTY copy left and trying to figure out what else to buy that I will actually play.

At no point did I really argue against Steam. My response was simply directed toward those who think Steam will continue, with full game access, even if they go under or get bought out. A mountain of prior evidence shows that this will not be a case.

The point being made is that while every system of delivery has weaknesses, physical media with non-phone home DRM places the onus entirely on the customer. With Steam and Steam-like services, you place your faith in the distributor to stay afloat. Whether you opt to buy one way or other depends on your personal values and, of course, if alternatives are even available for what you want to purchase. But either way, believing Steam is "too big to fail" and that you'll always have access to your purchases is complete and utter lunacy.
Never said it was impossible but it is improbable. Even GM almost went under - as stated. But...

That is a customer base somebody/organization will be interested in and it will be in their interest to keep them happy.

Besides I fully expect to play all the games I subscribe to before I die or Steam goes belly-up whichever comes first. And of not, so be it, It is not as if a Steam Library will make a valued family legacy like the Grandfather clock or a gold watch. They are just video games.

It's not that simple. Distribution on Steam requires an agreement between Valve and the IP holder. Depending on the terms of their agreement, it may be necessary to renegotiate distribution rights in the event of a Valve buyout and transfer of services. If the IP holder has changed their minds about distribution, or simply doesn't exist in anymore, Valve 2.0 may lose their ability to distribute it.

This has already happened plenty of times, but the most recent example that I can think of is with Direct2Drive. When they were bought out by GameFly, large sections of their catalog were eliminated, and users could no longer access them. This was due to licensing troubles. Some of it was tied up in holding companies that had no interest in doing anything but holding onto their IP. Some of had vague ownership that could not be resolved. And some IP owners simply changed their mind about distribution and used the D2D merger to pull out.

When Valve eventually folds, merges, or is picked apart by outside investors, this will undoubtedly happen. The question is whether anyone will still care about these games when it occurs. Given that Atari games are still being actively bought and sold, my guess is that it's going to be quite a problem.
I had a D2D account and I have no problem accessing my purchases still on gamefly if I needed them.

Dear Direct2Drive Customer,

Welcome to GameFly! Buying your favorite games just got easier - now you have three ways to pre-order and purchase PC & Mac games, all connected with one login for your convenience.

If you've bought games on Direct2Drive, these purchases are now saved in your GameFly Purchase History.

You'll be able to access your GameFly account with one login across our website, Client, and mobile app. Your GameFly account will let you continue to purchase games just like you did on D2D.

Same story of the purchase of Impulse by Gamestop.

Valve is privately owned so these hypotheticals are moot.

Then you were lucky. Google "Direct2Drive games no long available" and you'll get a good idea of how widespread the problem is.

The problem is this: when a service like this gets bought out, there is little to no incentive for the new owners to go through the expensive process of renegotiating thousands and thousands of distribution contracts. The customers' money has already been spent. So you make deals with the bigger distributors, then offer perfunctory coupons or discounts to customers who complain, and call it a day. When Steam eventually merges with someone else, this is undoubtedly what is going to happen.

The same thing happened with Impulse for parts of their catalog.

Alright... I get it... you don't like subscription services like Steam. So... what is your purpose monitoring this thread? Are you a Steam client? What games have you bought this sale?

Anyone who does not pick up Trine 2 for $3.74 right now is silly.

That angry joe review is pretty convincing, lol, so I got the mount and blade collection. I'm just glad I was able to wait this long to get all these deals. It takes a lot of discipline to wait on these prices to fall.

I'm hoping to get Mass Effect 1 & 2 together for around $7.50 or less. I don't think they have been that cheap yet so hopefully they show up sometime during this sale.
I would love to get ME 1 and 2 for that price. Hope Amazon can do this for us!

Everyone should buy Killing Floor. It is the best way to kill zombies. Don't be fooled by the Metascore. That was given when the game had 5 weapons instead of 36. Before it had 7 classes level up. Before it had 22 official maps and endless user created content.

This game works great on older computers. I run it on my 5 year old laptop sometimes. lol
Buy it, turn the gamma up slightly and go to town!
