Defense Grid 2 Kickstarter
I had never heard of DG when I got it, it was a strategy game, it was on a steep holiday sale (which I found in the mega steam sale thread here), so I grabbed it on impulse. I've never gotten a better deal on a game, and that would still be true if I'd paid full price. I've bought the DLC on the spot as it came out and I've repeatedly hassled the devs for a sequel. Now they're willing to give it a shot with gamer support instead of publisher support.

In addition to the quality, killer design, balance and polish, what sets DG apart from even great tower defense is its dual faceted interest system. Interest gains on your resource balance but at a rate that varies with how many cores are in the housing at a given moment. It's often advantageous, especially in the early game, to let cores get out of the housing temporarily, because a gun next to core gets around twice as much firing time (shoots as the aliens go in, and as they come out) as a gun next to say, an entrance, and is more valuable, but as the game goes on and you have more of a resource balance, you're incentivized to kill aliens quicker and allow fewer cores to ever leave the housing.
Outside of a tutorial level, or a mode that has no interest, you almost can't get the same score twice, and you can always improve your score a little bit, especially in a longer mode like Grinder. This makes it a fantastic competitive game if you've got friends on steam you can constantly one-up and taunt to figure out how you made your build a little more efficient. Back in the early days, the community ran a weekly leaderboard competition where you had about 24 hours to post your best new score on a mode, and the winner chose the new mode. Under those constraints, people got creative, and in DG, creativity pays off.
