Buy a cheap unlocked GSM phone and get a prepaid SIM card upon arrival.
If you refer to your husband/wife as 'DH/DW', you're too old to be active on a forum.
If you ask for marriage advice on a(ny) forum, you should seriously reevaluate your life. If you don't know the difference between 'their', 'there', and 'they're', I automatically assume you have a mental disability (same goes for to/two/too and your/you're/yore). |

I'd get a used, unlocked GSM quadband world phone from ebay. You can find them starting around $15 or so.
Check out this guide to using cell phones overseas [clarkhoward.com]. It gives additional ideas for saving money regarding the SIM cards. I'm not sure where in Italy you're going, but my favorite Italian restaurant in the world is Al Giubileo Ristorante - Pizzaria. It's at the corner of Via Boschetto and Via Palermo about 50 yards south of Via Nazionale in Rome, Italy. Here's the address: Via Palermo, 7 (angolo Via del Boschetto, 44) 00184 Roma Tel: 06.485929 The food here is absolutely amazing. The service is equally wonderful. Very friendly with some English-speaking waiters. They also have very late hours as with most sit-down restaurants in Italy. My favorite Italian cheese (OK, maybe it's a toss up between this and Parmigiano-Reggiano) is Burrata Burese. If you can get your hands on this cheese, EAT IT. Also, beware of eateries that sport huge, color photos of pizzas and piles of different kinds of pasta. They have no kitchens and simply microwave prepackaged, frozen food. This stuff tastes worse than any frozen food you'll find in your grocery store's frozen food section. Seek out and eat plenty of good Neapolitan-style pizza. The restaurant I mentioned above serves simply amazing pizza. I'd also make it a point to seek out good gelato. Where in Italy are you going? Use wisely your power of choice.

I lived in Italy 17 years and speak fluently Italian.
For restaurants my suggestion is to ask the locals. Even the guy that works in the bank. Most likely he speaks a little English. They will direct you to the best tasting restaurants. Most businesses shut down in August completely. If you are going to a major city, that is not always the case. Most Italians have 6 weeks of vacation a year.
