Windows Home Server or something else?
I wanted to setup a server/host to share all of my media files and pictures. WHS 2011 sounds interesting because of the drive extender feature. Just wondering if others have already gone this route and can recommend it or something else? I already have an unused pc that I could put WHS on, and have several hard drives. |

WHS 2011 does NOT have Drive Extender.
I bought WHS a few months ago and am considering switching to just a simple Linux server. WHS doesn't have Media Center so in order to play files that are stored on the WHS machine on my XBox as a MCE, I also must be running my main desktop. |

Ditto file sharing.... home server sounds "nice" but in reality just doing sharing works and saves energy. I can stream to XBox or my sony SNP player or other computers. No need for a server.

WHS is great for these cases:
- Network wide home backups with de-duplication, mounting of any backup set as a network drive for individual file restore, or entire bare-metal restore in the event of whole drive crash or massive malware infection. - Internet sharing for certain specific use cases that aren't already covered in something else you have access to or own. - Running virtual machines on if you already use one of the above scenarios (otherwise go with just a box for VMs) Coming in the next version of Windows Server will be Drive Pools, a proper implementation of Drive Extender. WHS as a stand-alone product will cease to exist and the Essentials version of Server will replace it. Steve Gibson on password policies [grc.com]: I mean, I don't get this change it every eight weeks. ... It's not as if passwords are traveling by camel after they've been stolen, going to the bad guys, and so there's, like, some weird eight-week window, like, oh, we're going to change your password so that the stale password no longer works. ... And all this does is make IT people despised because users, who are not dumb, they think, why am I - why do I have to do this? What problem is this solving?
