For $49.99 the Galaxy Nexus has LTE. We have WiMax in our area, but no plans that I have seen for LTE anytime soon so I got the Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic Touch. I am told that all 3G coverage areas will have LTE by the end of 2013.
Coverage for LTE 1900mhz I presume... And then they start work on rolling out LTE 800mhz! Which (as of right now) no current Sprint LTE phone supports...

As slow as Sprint is going with LTE, 800mhz coverage will be more than 22 months away so you can get a new subsidized phone by then.

Sprint dropped the Nexus and the Galaxy S2 from this offer, but added the HTC EVO™ 4G LTE for $49.99.

The list of $0.99 phones are now down to:

Motorola ADMIRAL 3G Android Smartphone

LG Rumor Reflex 3G Dumbphone

Kyocera Rise 3G Android Smartphone

Kyocera DuraXT 3G durable dumbphone

and for $49.99 the HTC EVO™ 4G LTE Android Smartphone.

Other push to talk phones are available in different Zip Codes.

It is a "back door" for those of us who were using Push To Talk on the old IDEN network which Sprint is phasing out. Sort of like how the Dell MPP or EPP (Employee Pricing Program) links have lower prices than the regular Dell site. There is no catch and you do not have to sign up for PTT. I used the link to get a Samsung Galaxy S2 for $0.99 on one of my lines back in July with no problems.

So people who are currently with Sprint have been able to use this upgrade route with no repercussions even though the web site clearly states it's for current Nextel customers? I gather that from the thread posts but it seems a bit odd that it actually works.

Yes, I got a GS2 for $0.99 through this link in July and others here have reported success.

The biggest problem with Sprint is that they don't honor their contract. I had 5 line 2ry contract for $173 per month. By the end of my contract, they have changed it 4 times and now it's $230 per month.

You can't trust this provider. And their cell service really sucks.
